Fix Your PC Or Mobile Device Doesn’t Support Miracast Issue

Miracast is a technology that creates a wireless connection between your mobile device (phone, tablet, laptop) and a TV or projector. This will allow you to display the content of your mobile device to a larger screen. This makes it easy for you to share the contents on your mobile device to a wider audience. Although this is a solid technology there are instances when certain issues can occur. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the “Your PC or mobile device doesn’t support Miracast, so it can’t project wirelessly” error.

Fix Your PC Or Mobile Device Doesn’t Support Miracast Issue

Before performing any of the recommended troubleshooting steps listed below it’s best to restart your computer or phone first. This action refreshes the operating system and remove any corrupt temporary data that could be causing the problem.

How does Miracast work?

  • First, your mobile device needs to support Miracast. Devices like Samsung smartphones or other Android phones, as well as devices that use Windows 8 or 10, typically have the technology built-in.
  • Second, you’ll need a Wireless Display Adapter . These adapters plugs right into an available HDMI port on your TV and receives the signal from your mobile device.

There are several factors that can cause this particular problem ranging from a Wi-Fi setting  to an incompatible device. Listed below are the recommended troubleshooting steps you need to do to fix this problem.

Make sure that your computer is Miracast compatible

The first thing you will need to do in this case is to make sure that your computer supports a Miracast connection.

  • Press Windows key + R to open up a Run dialog box. Then, type “powershell” and press Enter to open a new Powershell window.
  • In the Powershell window type the following command Get-netadapter|select Name, ndisversion then press enter.
  • If the returned NdisVersion is above 6.30, your PC is equipped to support Miracast from a network point of view.

If the version is below 6.30 then you can perform the following steps

  • Open a new Run dialog box (Windows key + R)
  • Type devmgmt.msc
  • Try updating your Wireless Network Adapter by going to Network adapters and right-clicking on Update driver.

Once the driver has been updated to 6.30 and above proceed with the following steps.

  • To test the graphics drivers, press Windows key + R to open up a Run dialog box again.
  • In the run box, type “dxdiag” and press Enter to open the DirectX Diagnostic ToolPage.
  • DirectX Diagnostic ToolPage is opened, expand the Display tab and look at the bottom of the Drivers column for the Driver Model. If the driver model does not state WDDM 1.3 or above, your system is not equipped to accommodate a Miracast connection.

Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled on both devices

Although Miracast does not use your home Wi-Fi network to work it still requires that Wi-Fi be turned on on both devices as it creates its own direct wireless signal between your mobile device and the TV.

On Windows 10

  • Go to the Start Menu and select Settings.
  • Click on Networks & Internet.
  • Select Wi-Fi on the left pane.
  • Scroll down and click on Change adapter options.
  • Right click on the Wi-Fi adapter and click Enable.

On an Android device

  • From a Home screen, swipe up or down from the center of the display to access the apps screen.
  • Go to Settings  > Connections > Wi-Fi.
  • Tap the Wi-Fi switch to turn on.

Enable Intel Integrated Graphics

If the issue occurs when trying to use your computer then you should try to enable the Intel integrated graphics from the BIOS.

THere are different ways to access the BIOS depending on the computer manufacturer. On most machines, the BIOS key is one of the F keys (F2, F4, F8, F10) or the Del key (on Dell computers). You can also do an online search with “bios key + your motherboard manufacturer”.

When you are in the BIOS settings, look for an Advanced (Expert settings, or something similar) menu and look for an entry named or similar to Advanced Chipset Settings. Next, select SouthBridge Configuration and change the Primary Graphics Adapter to IGP > PCI > PCI-E.

There are cases when the Wi-Fi might already be switched on for both devices but they are working on different frequencies. To avoid this you need to set the wireless adapter to auto.

  • Press Windows key + R to open up a Run dialog box.
  • Type “devmgmt.msc” and press Enter to open Device Manager.
  • Inside Device Manager, expand the Network adapters drop-down menu, right-click on your Wireless Network Adapter and click on Properties.
  • In the Properties screen of your Wireless Network adapter, go to the Advanced tab, select the Wireless Mode Selection property and set it’s value to Auto.
  • Click Ok and wait until the network connection is restored.
  • Restart your computer

Uninstall the wireless adapter driver

In case the issue still persists even after performing the steps listed above then you should try to uninstall the wireless adapter driver.

  • Press Windows key + R to open up a Run dialog box. Then, type “devmgmt.msc” and press Enter to open Device Manager.
  • Inside Device Manager, expand the Network adapters menu, then right-click on your Wireless Network Adapter and click on Uninstall Device.
  • You will be asked once again to confirm the uninstallation of the driver. Upon clicking Uninstall, the driver will be uninstalled and you will lose the connection to the internet if you are connected wirelessly.
  • Restart your machine. At the next startup, Windows will automatically reinstall the missing driver
