Fix a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge that won’t charge after an update, charges with PC only, other charging & power related issues

In this post, I will address some of power and/or charging issues with the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge (#Samsung #GalaxyS6Edge) including the issue wherein the device refused to take a charge after a firmware update. Can a firmware update cause this problem? Yes. In fact, we already received a lot of charging problems caused by updates. It’s because the firmware plays a very important role in charging your phone.

This is where you can find the Liquid Damage Indicator (LDI) in your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.

Other issues include situations wherein the phone charges with a computer only, gets too hot while charging and becomes unresponsive while trying to charge. Read on to know more about these problems and their solutions.

If you are looking for a solution to a different problem, then visit our S6 Edge troubleshooting page where we list down every problem we address each week. Galaxy S6 Edge won’t take a charge after an update

Problem: I eliminated most 3rd party apps. My problem is after last software update 2 weeks ago my phone won’t take a charge from charge port. Also screen turns on saying (dock in). Then it turns itself on and of flickering a rainbow of red / green / yellow covering whole screen with a rhythmic sound going on off on off! It will power up with removing case and placing on QI charging plate. Sometimes after it’s on QI pad it will turn itself like explained prior. Please any help would be appreciated. Best regards to the team. — Frank Sr.

Troubleshooting: I never actually encountered this kind of charging issue before especially that it occurred after an update. You said, however, that the issue started two weeks after the update so I really want to know if the phone was working fine immediately after an update without any trace of this problem or if the device already manifested some of the symptoms.

If you think it was the update that ruined the performance of your phone, then try doing the master reset but don’t forget to backup all your important data first and of course, make sure there’s enough battery left.

How to master reset Galaxy S6 Edge

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
  3. When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
  4. Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  6. Press the Vol Down button again until the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
  7. After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.

If the problem persists after the reset, it’s time you had the phone checked by a technician. If it was the update that brought this problem, reinstalling the firmware may fix the issue, otherwise, the tech will further troubleshoot it to know what really caused it.

Galaxy S6 Edge charges with computer only

Problem: We are having a problem with charging the phone now. The phone has been charged many ways: original charger, car dock and plug in car charger, also computer. Now it is only charging on computer and limited outlets with original charger but only 50%. Then it stops charging.

Troubleshooting: The phone charges, somehow. That’s a good thing. What does the phone do or tell you when you plug it in? Does it give you an error? A prompt, perhaps? Or anything all? If there’s an error or a prompt, then that’s your key to finding a solution online.

Let’s try to dwell on the fact that the phone charges with the computer or some outlets but can’t get past 50%. If the phone just stops charging without apparent reason, I’m thinking maybe the charging port is loose. Try to unplug the cable and plug it back in securely and then try moving the cable from side to side, up and down (but gently) to see if there’s a play. If there is, it’s just a loose connection. Try using a different cable. If the problem persists, then have a tech take a look at it. If the port is really loose, the tech may recommend it to be replaced.

On the other hand, it could also be a battery problem and since your phone doesn’t have a user-replaceable battery, you need a tech to inspect it for you.

Galaxy S6 Edge neither turns on nor charges

Problem: My phone will not turn on or charge. When it randomly stopped working it still had at least half a battery left. The LED light will not turn on when plugged into the original charger and the phone doesn’t turn on when the power key is held for 7 seconds.

Troubleshooting: One of the reasons why a phone won’t turn on is because maybe the battery was depleted so it couldn’t power up but since you are certain there’s enough juice left before the phone died, let’s jump to one procedure that may fix both the not turning on and not charging problems–force restart.

  • Press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons for 20 seconds or until the phone’s screen turns on.

If this procedure still left the phone dead or unresponsive, then it’s time you had it checked by a tech.

Galaxy S6 Edge not turning on, charges but gets too hot

Problem: My phone was dead I had put it to charge icon came on. I jumped out of the shower i looked at my phone & it wasn’t on not even the led or screen. I grabbed the phone it was hot. I tried turning it on I tried all the troubleshooting and the resets and nothing. What can I do?

Troubleshooting: Why did the phone died in the first place? Was it overheating prior to dying? If it was, then you have no other option but to send it in for repair.

I’m a little confused, though because you said you “tried all the troubleshooting and the resets” but nothing happened. I mean, how could you reset the phone that’s doesn’t even turn on?

Try booting it is safe mode, recovery mode, download mode. If you can bring the phone to boot to any of these modes, then there’s a chance you can fix the problem by yourself. Otherwise, let the tech do it.

Galaxy S6 Edge red LED light is on, device is unresponsive

Problem: I plugged in my phone before I went to bed, and the red light lit up as usual to show that it was charging. However, when I woke up in the morning, the red light was still on, which is unusual, and my phone was unresponsive. I unplugged it, tried my wireless charger, and tried all the buttons but it is still unresponsive.

Related Problem: My phone has a black screen as if there is no charge. A small blue light is flashing at the top of the device, but it is not showing a detection from the charger when I plug it in. It won’t turn on or off. Phone is about a month old.

Troubleshooting: I don’t know what the cause is but I’m certain it’s a system crash. Just unplugged the phone and then press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons to reboot the phone. The should fix it.

Galaxy S6 Edge can’t boot up successfully

Problem: When I went to turn on my phone the “Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge” screen is on a loop and won’t go away.

  2. Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
  3. When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  4. When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  5. Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Press the Power key to select.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

If the problem persists, do the master reset. Follow the steps in the first problem.

Galaxy S6 Edge screen blinks while charging

Problem: Last night while charging my phone, it start to  blinks (black white screen to black) every five minutes. Green indicator of full charging was steady on. As I disconnect it from the charger screen became black but the green light still was on. I tried reset the phone wirh button combination but… no respond. Only when power on/off button is pressed or connect it to charger, screen blinks again. I have to tell that as i try to reset it the device or charge it is getting hot. What may have happened?

Troubleshooting: I have to say this is just a system crash. Just press the Volume Down and Power buttons for 20 seconds and phone will reboot. You can then continue charging it.

Galaxy S6 Edge water damage led to not charging issue

Problem: It got wet we dried it and now the phone e was working but the battery was drained to zero so we turned it off and now it won’t charge. It shows that it is charging but it won’t charge the battery. Is there anything I can do short of seeing a technician. It was only in there after for a few seconds.

Suggestion: Somehow, water found it’s way into the phone and liquid damage is liquid damage however short a period the phone was submerged in water. Now, the basic charging process is affected. The sad truth is there’s nothing we can do about it. So see a technician about it; that’s all you can do for now.

Related Problem: Recently submerged in less than two feet of saltwater. Phone wouldn’t charge one hour later. Battery eventually drained. Tried volume down power key reset. No result. Intermittently shows gray battery with lightning bolt icon when I plug in to several appropriate USB chargers. Led charge indicator does not illuminate.

Related Problem: I went to charge my phone and the lights began to flicker and change color and then went dead. I unplugged my phone removed my otter box case and realized it was wet. I believe my phone got wet due to rain seeping through my backpack at the boat race.

Related Problem: I forgot to take out the phone from my pocket when i jumped into the sea, and after a min i felt something in the pocket that was my phone i just took the phone out and gave it to my cousin while the phone was on that time , when he was removing the water drops from the mobile phone suddenly the screen got black and then after tried to soothing the water with hair dryer it didn’t work .

Problem: My mobile is not fully charging from last few weeks i am using genuine samsung charger provided with my s6 edge but my mobile does not charge over 54% the charging sign appears but it does not charge after that point. Please help with this issue.

Troubleshooting: There could be tons of apps and services running in the background. Try booting your phone in safe mode and turn on the Airplane mode and let the phone charge. If charges with all third-party apps disabled and wireless functions turned off, then there’s no problem with the phone. Just reset it to give it a fresh start and that should fix the problem. However, if the problem still happens in safe mode, it’s time you had it checked.

How to boot Galaxy S6 Edge in safe mode

  1. Turn off your Galaxy S6 Edge.
  2. Press and hold the Power key.
  3. When ‘Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge’ appears, immediately release the Power key and then press and hold the Volume Down button.
  4. Continue holding the Volume Down button until the phone finishes the restart.
  5. When you see Safe Mode on the lower left corner of the screen, release the button.
