Facebook App SSL Handshake Timeout On Samsung Galaxy S3

“Sorry, an unexpected error has occured, please try again latter. (SSL Handshake Timeout).”

This is one of the error messages you might encounter while using the Facebook app on Android. When the error message appears, you couldn’t’ be able to log in to your FB account, at least, on your phone. Based on reports from owners who have encountered the problem, the resolution varies. There are those who said the problem was resolved all by itself while a huge percentage said they had to do some troubleshooting procedures to continue using FB on their phones.

I have been experiencing similar problem; for weeks now, I can’t access my FB account with my phone but I can access it with other device.

It first started after I updated my account to the latest version. My Facebook page refused to load for like hours. I switched off my phone, removed my battery and I placed it back, I tried logging in several times after but to no avail. So, I uninstalled the account and installed, but I still can’t login. The following are the most possible causes why this problem happens from times to time.

Possible Causes

  • Temporary application problem.
  • Corrupt data.
  • Network-related problem.


Now here are the things you need to do to fix the problem.

Soft-reset the device. Owners who claimed that the problem was temporary said that a simple reboot could fix it but it is recommended you do a soft-reset, instead. You just need to take the battery out off the compartment for about a minute, put it back on and then turn the phone on. This procedure will not only refresh the phone’s memory but would also clear static electricity in the device’s components.

Clear Cache and Data. Since it is an application-specific problem, clearing cache and data is always included in the troubleshooting process. Caches are data used by applications while data include personal settings and customizations. Clearing these will require the owner to set everything up again once Facebook app is launched. Here’s how you do it:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings, then Application Manager.
  3. Swipe left twice to choose All tab.
  4. Scroll to and tap Facebook.
  5. Tap Force Stop button.
  6. Tap Clear Cache, then tap Clear Data.
  7. Launch Facebook and enter credentials.
  8. Check to see if the SSL error still occurs.

Reinstall Facebook. If the clearing of cache and data won’t solve the problem, try to go a little deeper by reinstalling the application.

  1. Launch Play Store.
  2. Tap My Apps.
  3. Tap Facebook.
  4. Tap Uninstall.
  5. Reboot phone.
  6. Launch Play Store again.
  7. Search for Facebook app.
  8. Install.

This procedure will clear everything about the application on your phone including its directories and settings and would require the system to cache new data after the installation. Now go check if the SSL Handshake error still happens.

Check Your Network. If you have access to the settings of the network you’re connecting with, you might want to change its security type and see if the problem is resolved after you do it. This is based on reports from other users that the issue could also be based on a network glitch. Moreover, it is recommended you power-cycle your network equipment.

Factory Reset. If all of these procedures fail and Facebook is one of the apps you don’t want to miss in your phone, back everything up and bring the phone back to its original settings.
