DOOGEE Y6 Max 3D Budget Large Screen Phone Review

Doogee, a popular manufacturer of budget smartphones, started as a local phone brand in Spain. In 2013, Xin Chao, the CEO of KVD International Group, acquired the company and brought it to the global market. Since then, Doogee released a number of popular affordable smartphones with hardware specifications trumping most other devices in the price range, namely the Doogee X5 and X6.

Announced at the end of last year and introduced at MWC 2017 in Barcelona, Doogee’s highly anticipated 3D smartphone, Doogee Y6 Max 3D is finally here. The Y line of Doogee smartphones competes with mid-range devices from major smartphone manufacturers. Y smartphones, such as the Y100 Plus, Y200, or Y300, are still affordable, but they come with better-performing chipsets and premium features.

The Doogee Y6 Max 3D is virtually identical to its younger brother, Doogee Y6 Max. But while the regular Y6 Max costs just $130, the Y6 Max 3D retails for $160–$180. The price difference is caused solely by the glass-free 3D display the Y6 Max 3D comes with. While the technology itself is nothing new, this is the first time we see it available at such an affordable price.

Design and Build

One would expect a smartphone with a 6.5-inch display to be unwieldy, but the Doogee Y6 Max 3D is surprisingly portable thanks to slim bezels and lower body thickness. The smartphone measures 173 x 89 x 9mm and weighs 259 grams. It rounded corners make it fit nicely in hand, and the edges around the display are rounded for better comfort and more elegant look.

Under the display is a row of familiar capacitive buttons, and on the back is a fingerprint scanner and a rear camera with a dual-LED flash. The volume rocker and the power button have been placed on the right side, and the MicroSD card slot is located on the left. The top side of the smartphone is where you find a 3.5mm audio port, and the bottom side houses a micro USB port and two speakers. The Doogee Y6 Max 3D is available in gold and silver.

The main feature of the Doogee Y6 Max 3D is the Full HD AU Optronics G+FF 6.5-inch display with a 2.5D curved glass. According to Solid State Technology, the advantages of G+FF (a glass sheet and two layers of ITO film) displays are low capital cost, better image quality, and lower thickness.

Since G+FF displays essentially display two different screens at once, they make it possible to see images with a parallax stereo effect with a proper sense of depth. Of course, this only works with compatible Android apps, which is where the technology smashes into a brick wall at high speed.

Do you remember the LG Optimus 3D? It is a 3D-enabled smartphone released in 2011 in the UK and has been touted as the world’s first full 3D mobile phone. While LG developed several 3D apps for the device and even released a 3D user interface, third-party manufacturers weren’t all that thrilled by the prospect of adding another dimension to their apps and games.

It’s clear that mobile VR and AR is the future, so we don’t see why any developer would suddenly decide to start making 3D android apps and games in 2017. Still, some compelling content exists, and the display itself looks great. For most smartphone users, the regular Doogee Y6 Max is most likely a better option, though.

The Doogee Y6 Max 3D features a respectable 13 MP rear camera with a dual-LED flash that produces a neutral light to preserve the original color balance of the scene. The sensor is made by Samsung, and it features the company’s Phase Detection Auto Focus system and a f/2.2 aperture.

The front camera is from Hynix, a South Korean memory semiconductor supplier of dynamic random-access memory chips and flash memory chips. More specifically, it’s the HM553 5.0 MP sensor with the 83-degree angle. The camera app automatically detects faces and can instantly remove blemishes and smooth out skin.

Both cameras take decent pictures that look better than what you would get from most similarly-priced smartphones.

The Doogee Y6 Max 3D is one of the most future-proof budget smartphones out there. With 3 GB of memory and 32 GB of expandable storage space, newer versions of the Android operating systems will run just as smoothly as the build of Android 6.0 Marshmallow that comes pre-installed on the smartphone. Just don’t be too harsh on the manufacturer for saving money on English proofreading. At worse, you might be slightly confused for a few seconds before you figure out the meaning of the pop-up message, and, at best, you get a good laugh.

MediaTek’s MT6750 64-bit octa-core SoC is responsible for all the heavy lifting, while ARM’s Mali-T860 GPU takes care of 2D and 3D graphics acceleration. Both perform well, and we never had to wait too long for an app to load or a process to finish. Even when switching between multiple apps, the smartphone was able to keep up without breaking a sweat.

The included 4,300mAh battery easily lasts up to 2 days of regular usage and up to 10 hours of heavy usage. With the included 5V/2A charger, it takes just a few hours to charge it back to the maximum capacity. The Doogee Y6 Max 3D also supports 4G LTE, has two SIM card slots, and support for OTG.

  • 3D display
  • Good cameras
  • Excellent build quality
  • Fingerprint reader
  • Stereo speakers
  • 4G connectivity

  • Lack of 3D content
  • Minor software quirks

If you’re shopping for a sub-$200 smartphone, the Doogee Y6 Max 3D is an excellent choice. For $160–$180, you get what’s essentially a well-rounded mid-range smartphone with a high-resolution 3D display as a nice bonus. You can also go with the regular Doogee Y6 Max and save a few bucks by giving up the 3D display.
