China Union Branch Announces TransPhone And TransPad Smartphone-Tablet Combo

China Union Branch has brought out a new smartphone-tablet combination that it announced back in June when it was still being developed. Now, the product, called the TransPhone and the TransPad have been officially released. The combination is similar to what ASUS had done on the Padfone. The smartphone is connected to a larger display through a docking system, converting the display into a tablet.

The device may be a less expensive alternative to the original ASUS Padfone which retails for $900. As a set, the TransPhone and the TransPad cost $430. Separately, however, the TransPhone is priced at $380 whereas the TransPad costs $140. There are also bundled packages available. A Family Pack, which provides the consumer two units of the smartphone, three units of the TransPad, as well as two chargers is valued at $1000. Meanwhile, a Business Pack, which comes with 15 TransPad units plus 10 TransPhones costs $4500.

For the lower price, users do not get top-of-the-line specifications. The TransPhone runs on a SnapDragon S1 processor working with 512MB RAM and ROM and 512MB of internal memory. China Union Branch provides a 32GB microSD card, as well.

Its display is 3.5-inch TFT LCD capacitive multi-touch screen with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels and support for 16 million colors. The smartphone also comes with Android 2.3.5 as its operating system. Two cameras are also onboard, the main one having a 5-megapixel sensor and autofocus while the secondary one comes with a 0.3-megapixel sensor. Video capture at 30 frames per second and a resolution of 640 x 480 is possible on the device.

As for connectivity, the TransPhone offers Wi-Fi I802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, and personal hotspot. Other features include GPS, the ability to lock the device in portrait or landscape mode, and support for a wide range of image, music, and video files.

The smartphone and the tablet weigh 114 grams and 374 grams, respectively.
