Problem #1: How to change sound notification for email app on Galaxy Note 4

Hi. I have a Verizon, Samsung Galaxy Note 4 phone and need some information on how to turn sound notification ON & OFF for different events.  Specifically, I get a Sound notification that I can (roughly) correlate with receiving an email. I have as my email provider and Verizon as my cell phone service provider. I hear the sound notification and my email shows a new email within the last minute. No text messages, voice mail, or “media” have been received. I need to turn OFF this notification, no matter what event is triggering the notification. Very annoying to have this sound notification going off several times during the night and at unexpected times during the day.

I have checked my SETTINGS, Sound and notifications, Ringtone, Media, Notifications, System settings. The sound associated with these 4 settings is NOT the sound I want to turn OFF.

By the way, what event is associated with the “Media” setting? Same question for the “System” setting; the System setting is silent when tapped. The other three play the selected tone when tapped. Is there a sound notification associated with receipt of an email?

I have looked through the on board help, the Note 4 user guide and a couple of on line sites and con not find information about email receipt sound notification.

I would appreciate any help, tutorials or links that has general information about Verizon, Samsung Galaxy Note 4 sound notification and specific information about email sound notification (if it exists). Thanks for your help! — Sherman

Solution: Hi Sherman. First of all, we want to emphasize the point that we don’t work for Verizon and we are not experts on their Samsung Galaxy Note 4 firmware. There may be a community of developers out there that study in depth details about Verizon firmware but we are definitely not among them. That said, our opinions regarding all things Verizon firmware are not authoritative in the strict sense of the word. Most of the time, our knowledge regarding specific software products are public knowledge and can be found openly in the web. This also means that we can only give suggestions based on our general knowledge of Android. Your questions do not need specific knowledge about Verizon firmware though so we hope that we can help you in this one.

Now, sound notification issues are usually solved by simply tweaking notification settings. A particular way to do it varies slightly depending on Android version. Notification settings in both Android Lollipop and Android Marshmallow does not vary much so we hope you’re Note 4 runs any of these versions. For tutorial purposes, we will only be providing steps based on how you do it in Android Marshmallow.

Since your main concern is on how to prevent your Note 4 make any sound notification when it receives an email message, what you must do is the following:

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Scroll down to Notifications and tap it.
  • Look for email app and slide the button to off to disable it.

Doing these steps should tell the system not to notify you when an email comes in. Disabling notifications for a particular app done this way will also prevent the phone from sounding off, showing pop-ups in the status bar and  from vibrating.

What event is associated with the “Media” and System settings? Media in Android environment refers to audio and video files. It can also refer to apps that play media apps such as Youtube, stock video player, electronic publication readers (such Kindle), and other similar apps. In the context of sound notification, your phone may produce a sound whenever any of these apps has an incoming notification, or if you’re playing a media file (audio or video). In other words, an event that can trigger a media notification happens when there’s an incoming notification, or if  for an app that can play a media files. For example, you may have to change the media volume if the Youtube app is playing a video too loudly.

On the other hand, System settings are triggered notifications initiated by Android. For example, you may receive an audible system notification when your phone warns you that the battery has reached a certain point, or is about to run out.

Problem #2: How to recover files from a non-booting Galaxy Note 4

I have a Galaxy Note 4, not rooted or unlocked, that has suddenly developed a power up issue after suddenly shutting down for no apparent reason. This is roughly a few days after a recent software update (“improves the performance and enhancements of my Note 4” ). The latest operating system update {Marshmallow} was done approximately Sept 2016. The phone shuts down with 98% charge and went into the boot up screen with the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 screen, then the Verizon red screen…then you feel the vibration as though it’s starting, only it’s just repeating the same thing over and over. Samsung logo, buzz, Verizon red, buzz, logo, Verizon red, buzz and so forth.

I can put the phone into the Android recovery screen to clear the cache, which it says it does, then reboot, but it just repeats this boot up loop. I can also get it to go into the screen to boot up in safe mode, but this doesn’t actually start in safe mode either. I have tried to leave the battery out for several hours, no luck. I have removed the battery and held the power key for over 3 minutes to clear any static energy left behind, no luck either. I went to the Verizon store where the sales representative cheerfully reminded me that my phone is out of warranty, and I dropped the insurance when I got this phone (Aug 2015). He could sell me a new phone because he felt that this is a motherboard problem (all he did was fiddle with the keys a few times and then said he tried to do a factory reset (without my permission or asking if I did a backup, when I told him to stop, I said I can’t do a backup because the Kies3 program says this phone is not recognized as a compatible phone, and oddly enough the Smart Switch say almost the identical thing. Neither program will recognize the phone. I will be getting a replacement battery (Anker 6500 mha replacement since Samsung hasn’t made this replacement battery for a little more than a year, and hopefully I can recover the data on this. This is the most important thing for me, if the phone is at its usable end like the Verizon guy said, well so be it.

My wife and I have cancer related doctor appointments that were voice recorded, as well as prescription info and the next year’s worth of doctor appointment schedules in the calendar. I don’t trust Google with this personal info because I know they snoop and forward it to 3rd party snoops, so I intentionally did not sync the phone with Google or Verizon cloud. However, I have some pictures that were saved to the SD card that are from camera folder, but not any secondary folders that had our other doctor related pictures and meetings that were not saved to the SD card.

I have talked to the Samsung representative at Best Buy who mentioned that Samsung updates are basically killing peoples phones but he could try to contact Samsung on my behalf. Then he addressed the next customer in line. It’s as though these people realize that I am NOT buying another new phone, and I should be able to get more than 16 months of use out of their flagship phone, no one was willing to help me after that, period.

I am beyond pissed off because I really like this Note 4 in spite of having the exact same thing happen to the Note 2 and Note 3 in the same fashion — new update, premature and sudden death. Verizon rep actually cracked my screen on the Note 3 when I went to seek help with the power up issue with that one and I ended up getting a “free replacement Note 4,” which was not free, and he denies ever touching that phone, let alone cracking my screen. I ended up paying this phone down with a current balance of $108 and a worthless flat expensive brick at this point. Sorry I am rumbling, but I am beyond desperate to retrieve my data.

Most of the Samsung website reviews are bleak bad news stories. How if I decide to send the phone in, I may not get it back or if I do, all the data will be dumped and if they replace it, it will be a factory refurb with pre-existing issues and a short life and so on.

Any help with a suggestion on what to try next is most appreciated, if you email me back I promise not to ramble !! — Chuck

Solution: Hi Chuck. If your main concern right now is how to recover important files stored in the phone’s memory, the very first task that you want to do is to see if you can boot the phone back up. This is usually done by restarting the phone to safe mode but since you’ve already done that, the situation is almost as bleak as it can get. The only other mode that you can create a back up other than normal mode is safe mode. If your phone won’t boot to safe mode at this time, you either have to give up those files by attempting a factory reset or flashing stock firmware or leave the phone as it is forever. We doubt getting a battery replacement will change anything but if you can do that, go ahead.

Usual file recovery techniques require that the Nand chip, where files are located, is powered so files can be accessed. If the phone won’t even boot to safe mode or normal mode, there’s no way those files in the phone’s memory can be reached. Tools for digital forensics may be available but they are not for public consumption. We are not aware of any advanced file recovery technique and tools that can help in a situation like this.

Problem #3: Verizon Galaxy Note 4 gets stuck in boot loop

With a fully charged battery, my Note 4 will go through the boot screens all the way to the end of the red screen that shows the Verizon Wireless logo. However, instead of bringing up the launcher as it should, the phone will restart the entire boot sequence, all the way from the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 screen. I have a second battery that this does not happen with (as consistently), though it will loop the boot sequence occasionally. When the other battery does this i simply remove it and put it back in and that’s enough to solve the issue. I’ve tried every solution, the soft reset, factory resets, recovery mode, safe mode. Recovery mode will work, as it loads, but it’s no help. It does this whether on factory cable and wall adapter or a different one, or even not connected all together. I don’t fucking know what to do.

Also, i can’t get any computer anywhere to recognize my device. I never have been able to. It says ‘device driver descriptor failed – unable to identify device’ I don’t know if that’s any use or not but there ya go. — Robert

Solution: Hi Robert. We seem to be getting more and more Verizon update related issues so the cause of your problem must only be the Verizon firmware. Make sure that you let Verizon know of the problem so they can do appropriate action.

As far as solutions to this problem is concerned, your choices are very limited. If you can’t fix by doing a factory reset, consider flashing a stock firmware via Odin mode. If you haven’t tried it before, do some Google research on how to do it. Keep in mind that flashing can potentially brick the phone so make sure that you follow instructions to the letter and that you use the correct firmware.

Problem #4: Galaxy Note 4 won’t charge properly | Galaxy Note 4 won’t boot back up

Hi. i have been using my Note 4 all day with no problem. It got pretty low in battery (3%) so i put it on charge as usual and it buzzed as usual when plugged into charger but it was actually charging so it died. Then it would not turn on again. After a few attempts it started to buzz every few seconds when plugged into charger until unplugged. This happened a few times. it was also flashing up the first charging symbol but after that it never showed that it was actually charging. so i hard reset it and now i have to pull battery out, put back in, plug charger in and sometime it shows the charging symbol but does not charge or either just flashes a white line across the screen. Charged fine all day before and was fine the night before. it just done this out of the blue and i have a good feeling it’s not the charger or the charging port, as the charger work fine in other Samsung phone. and it gets some power when charger is plugged in. Also, my charger is genuine Samsung fast charger. Many thanks. — Philipconaughty

Solution: Hi Philipconaughty. Just like in any Android issue troubleshooting, the first logical step that you must do is to see if software is to blame. If you can manage to power the phone back on, below are the specific troubleshooting steps that you must try:

Recalibrate the battery. Sometimes, battery recalibration is needed to be done regularly to keep the operating system get good battery level readings. After a while, the operating system may find itself out of sync with the battery so you want to ensure that it does detect the actual power levels. If this doesn’t happen, the phone tends to shut off randomly even though battery levels does not yet show 0%. The OS must be retrained to read correct battery levels if you experience random shutdown issues. Here’s how it’s done:

  • Use the phone by playing games or doing tasks to hasten power discharge, until the phone turns itself off.
  • Turn the phone on again and let it turn itself off.
  • Charge the phone without turning it back on.
  • Wait until the battery says it fully charged to 100%
  • Unplug the charger and turn the phone on.
  • If the phone says it’s not 100% anymore, turn it off, plug the charger back in and wait until 100% charge is reached.
  • Unplug the charger the turn the phone on again.
  • Use the phone until you drain the battery down to 0.
  • Repeat the cycle once.

Update the operating system and apps. Updates are provided by Samsung, your wireless carrier, or app developers for a reason. Sometimes, updates are released to address specific problems so make sure that you don’t skip them. You may be lucky and an update may be able to fix the issue you’re having right now.

Boot to safe mode while charging. Another good troubleshooting step to try is restarting to safe mode during charging. Doing so will help you check if a third party app is responsible for the issue or not. Safe mode prevents third party apps from running so if the issue won’t occur, you can bet one of your apps is problematic. To boot to safe mode, follow these steps:

  • Turn off the phone completely.
  • Press and hold the Power key and the Volume Down key.
  • When the phone starts to boot, release the Power key but continue holding the Volume Down key until the phone finished restarting.
  • Safe mode will be display at the lower left corner; you may release the Volume Down key now.

Reset all software settings to default via factory reset. The ultimate software troubleshooting step that you can do, which may also actually be a solution, is factory reset. This process reverts all software settings to its known, working state, wiping all user data and doing away with other modifications introduced by apps. In other words, the software state should be back to its clean, known working condition, as if the phone has just been unboxed. If a software glitch has developed after you’ve installed some apps or updates, factory reset should effectively eliminate it. This means that if the problem remains right after a factory reset, software is not to blame.

Here’s how to factory reset your Note 4:

  • Turn off the Galaxy Note 4 completely.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home keys together, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Note 4 vibrates, release both the Home and Power keys but continue holding the Volume Up key.
  • When the Android System Recovery shows on the screen, release the Volume Up key.
  • Using the Volume Down key, highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  • Now highlight ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power key to begin the reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key.
  • The Note 4 will restart but it will be longer than usual. When it reaches the Home screen, then begin your setup

Remember, there’s only so much that you can do when it comes to Android troubleshooting. If nothing changes after a factory reset, start to consider other potential solutions like using another Samsung battery, charging port repair, or general hardware check up for your phone.

Problem #5: Google Photos not working properly in Galaxy Note 4

Alright. So about 2 days ago, I got my Note 4 activated. Previously, I had the Note 3. All I wanted to do was backup my apps and photos from it, but for some reason the photos gave me a hard time. My uncle, who’s a techy, recommended that I use Google Photos to backup my pictures, to which I responded no because I hate using it. I wanted to just connect my phone (the Note 3) to my PC and just copy the files onto it. But he insisted that I use Google Photos. Reluctantly, I agreed, but to my dismay, this did not work. I lost nearly half of my photos and my phone (Note 3) started crashing after only a few seconds of usage. On top of that, once I synced Google Photos to my new phone, the Note 4, it started doing something weird. It crashes/turns off at 17% like clockwork. I tried resetting my phone, but I’m still having the same problem.

Also, I charged my phone for about 3 hours (it doesn’t take that long but I was asleep so I just let it do its thing) and for some reason it was stuck at 91%- only for about an hour, though. I’m afraid of losing more data and photos, and I feel like that’s exactly what’s going to baleen if this keeps up. What more can I do? — Sarah

Solution: Hi Sarah. Try using Samsung Smart Switch if Google Photos seems buggy. We are not aware of any bug in Google Photos that results to the situation you’re experiencing but if you want to get to the bottom of the issue, we recommend that you contact Google.

For the second concern, try wiping the cache partition as it may simply be due to a corrupted system cache. Here’s how it’s done:

  • Turn off the Galaxy Note 4 completely.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home keys together, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Note 4 vibrates, release both the Home and Power keys but continue holding the Volume Up key.
  • When the Android System Recovery shows on the screen, release the Volume Up key.
  • Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option ‘wipe cache partition’ and press the Power key to select it.
  • When the wiping of the cache partition is finished, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the power key.

Problem #6: Galaxy Note 4 with Straight Talk SIM card can’t make/receive calls, no internet

Please, I’m begging you to help me. I bought both my sons, 8- and 10-yr olds Galaxy Note 4s for Christmas through Walmart online. Straight Talk cards came with them. I have been on the phone at least 10 times over an hour, each time trying to get my 10-year olds to get any kind of signal service. It won’t call at all and no internet either. My 8-yr old’s is same phone bought at same time with same plan and it works everywhere we go. Please help. I’m not a wealthy man, i can’t afford another phone and this 10-year old is crushed that he can’t use his main Christmas present at all. It is a Galaxy Note 4. — Michaelgroves86

Solution: Hi Michaelgroves86. If you’re 100% positive that your 10-yr old’s phone is exactly the same (which means they are of the same model number and not just the looks of it) as that of your 8-yr old, then the issue must lie not on the phone but on the SIM card. Consider getting a different Straight Talk SIM card and try again. If that won’t work, make sure that Straight Talk technical support team help you double check all the network settings, especially the APN settings. If all settings are correct, return the phone and get a replacement.
