Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for LG Optimus 2X may be coming soon

Owners of LG Optimus 2X, a dual-core Android device released in February 2011, should have already been expecting not to receive the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) update for their device. The company, however, recently released the source code indicating that the ICS update may still be coming after all, although the roll out date is not available as of the moment. While it still needs LG’s confirmation, it is crystal clear there would be a roll out soon unless the company would just want to throw away efforts of its developers as well as the resources that were used for this update.

The Korean manufacturer didn’t actually released any statement saying Optimus 2X will not be able to receive ICS update. Speculations came earlier this year that it wasn’t interested in keeping the operating system up to date after it refused, on several occasions, to comment on questions regarding the said update. But looking into LG’s habit of rolling out updates, it seems like it doesn’t rush things out. When Optimus 2X was released in February 2011 with Android 2.2 Froyo in it, it took 10 months before the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update was rolled out in November. That said it is most likely that the ICS update for Optimus 2X will be rolled out next month, that’s a year after a major update was pushed.

Dubbed as LGSU660(Optimus-2X)_Android_ICS_SU660v30C, the link has been posted on LG Electronics’ website and can be downloaded from its servers directly. It is a major update from Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich so the file is considerably huge reaching up to 180MB in size. This action may be a sign that it still cares for its devices released almost a couple of years ago. However, it could also be a sign that this would be the last update Optimus 2X could ever receive. At least, it opens the possibility that third party modders, especially XDA Developers, would develop custom ROMs for the device. After all, everything is revealed in the package and that’s what developers need.

LG has yet to make an official announcement about the update in the following weeks. There is a possibility that the update will be rolled out in the third week of November just like last year. But after a year of waiting, at least, owners now have the reason to be happy. ICS may not be the latest version of Android now but it would still bring hundreds of features, fixes and performance boosters.
