Acer Liquid Glow, Low Budget Ice Cream Sandwich Device Now Available

Earlier this year, Acer had announced a low budget Android 4.0 Ice ream Sandwich powered device called the Liquid Glow. It was due to be released in a variety of colors. Retailer Expansys now has both Black and White models in stock. It is unknown when we’ll be seeing anymore colors. I wouldn’t expect there to be a huge delay for the Pink model. I do hope they end up adding in a Red or Blue model too. The price is definitely budget friendly as Acer said it would be. It sits at £148 and as far as I know, it’s currently only available in Europe.

The specifications for the Acer’s new Liquid Glow are listed below respectively:

  • Display – 480 x 800 pixels, 3.7 inches (252 ppi pixel density)
  • Memory – Card slot microSD, up to 32 GB
  • Internal Memory – 1 GB, 512 MB RAM
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Bluetooth with A2DP, EDR
  • NFC
  • Camera – 5 MP, 2592 x 1944 pixels, autofocus, LED flash
  • OS  – Android OS, v4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
  • CPU – 1 GHz
  • Sensors – Accelerometer, proximity, compass
  • Colors – Black, White, Pink
  • Active noise cancellation with dedicated mic

It’s 3.7 inch display is really small compared to the phones we’re currently using, but again, this is a low budget phone so expecting crazy specifications isn’t really something you should be doing. To be honest, it’s is also very low sitting at 512MB, so if you’re looking to get a low budget phone for gaming, this probably isn’t something you should be looking into. As I said earlier, it’s powered by Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and rumors say that it is possible that it will be updated to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. With the memory the phone currently has (512MB) I’m not sure if Jelly Bean will end up happening. Surely the independent dev community over at the XDA Forums will make it happen though (there is no doubt about that whatsoever, some are even already talking about it)!

I guess my feelings are really mixed on this device. There’s a Micro SD slot for expanded storage of up to 32GB, NFC is also a plus. Both the CPU and RAM I am really not sure about. I guess 1GHz isn’t too bad but the 512MB RAM is terrible. If you’re looking for a cheap device to stay in touch with a child, this would probably be your ideal phone. That is, only if you’re looking for a cheap device. I’d suggest looking at some higher priced phones with better specs, but if cheap and low budget is what your looking at, the Acer Liquid Glow fits that category very nicely.

Budget range phones are really becoming popular lately. Between the G300, the ZTE Grand X, the HTC One V and the Desire C all have basically the same price point. I’m sure for low budget families they’re really bringing in a lot of revenue.
