It can take quite a bit to plan an international trip, especially to a place like Malta. However, you don't want to forget the most important thing: communication. You don't want to head out to Malta, using your carrier from back home. When you get back, you can very easily and quickly rack up hundreds, if not thousands in unnecessary carrier fees and overage charges. That's why you want to take an international SIM card with you to Malta. Plug that in your phone, and you'll be using EU data that doesn't cost so much money.
Not sure what SIM to pick up? Follow along with us below, and we'll show you five of our favorite choices available today. Let's dive right in.
Coming up as your number one best choice for traveling to Malta, you have the Orange Holiday SIM. This one has some great value for money, actually getting you data cheaper than you would find it in most places in the world, even in the US! Plug this into your phone, and you'll get fast 4G LTE data while in Malta.
You get a whole 10GB of data to use while in Malta, and then there's also two hours of talk time, and then another 1,000 SMS messages to use in addition to your data. The SIM is supposed to last 14 days, but you can add more days by topping off.
Mobal Europe Plus SIM
Up in second position, we're looking at the Mobal Europe Plus SIM. This one comes with 1GB right out of the gate, but after that's used up, you'll have to pay for each 1GB used. In addition, you have to pay for talk and text, which sits at 30¢ per minute rates in all countries, though rates are cheaper when calling to the US or Canada.
The payment options for the Mobal SIM isn't the most ideal in comparison to the Orange. That's because it's attached to your credit or debit card, and however much you use is automatically billed to your credit or debit card.
UK Europe ThreeUK SIM Card
Up next, we're looking at ThreeUK's own UK-Europe SIM card. This one is actually one of our favorites, since ThreeUK actually stays pretty competitive with the Orange Holiday SIM here. Just like Orange, you get plenty of data access, but also native talk and text support, too. ThreeUK gives you a whole 12GB of data, 3000 minutes in talk time and 3000 messages. You can use it up as needed, and then refill whenever you'd like.
It's worth noting that you can only use this SIM card in phones -- no other devices. You can't video stream with this SIM card either, nor use tethering or mobile hotspot.
Internet with legs Trio
The Internet with legs Trio SIM card is up next on our countdown. This one gives unlocked GSM phones a whole 3GB of data to use while in Malta, and over 30 other popular EU destinations. The biggest difference between this one and the prior from ThreeUK is that this does not have talk or text function. You're restricted to apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger for that.
Keepgo Global Lifetime SIM Card
Not the most ideal SIM on our list, but better than roaming charges, we have Keepgo's own Global Lifetime SIM. It works fairly similarly to the Mobal SIM card, with Keepgo only giving you 1GB of data that you can use, but it can be refilled as you need more. The data is valid for one-year, and every refill that you do increases the SIM cards validity for another year.
Since there's no talk or text features, you'll have to use talk and text over a social platform like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. Not a bad choice, since data is cheap here.
One of the best choices that you have for international travel of all sorts is the Orange Holiday SIM. Not only does this work well in Malta, but it's excellent for traveling from country to country, which is common in Europe. On top of that, it's one of the cheaper options that provides you with tons of data, as well as calling and texting features.
