What to do if Galaxy S8 fast wireless charging no longer works after an update

Our troubleshooting article for today covers an emerging issue about some #GalaxyS8 devices having problems with fast charging. Like any other power- or boot-related issues, the solutions in this post are the same ones we always recommend. As far as software troubleshooting is concerned, Android users are limited to the ones we provide below.

Problem #1: What to do if Galaxy S8 fast wireless charging no longer works after an update

Hello. When i plug in my Samsung “Fast Charge” wireless charger, i get a blue, then green, then blue blink on the indicator, then nothing. This is all with NO PHONE on the charger.  The charger used to work, now it does not. Nothing with my phone has changed (case, etc), but i did notice this after my latest system update. I am not very computer savvy, so if you ask a follow-up, i will do my best to help. btw, the phone is about 6 months old and was purchased brand new from Verizon. Solution: Hi Laurence. It’s normal for Samsung fast charging pad to show blue, green, and another blue light when you first boot it up. If this LED light switching occurs all the time and even when there’s no phone being charged, that can be sign of something amiss. Since you did not mention it, we’ll just ask straight from you: does the fast wireless charger still charges your phone normally? If it does, then simply ignore the LED behavior. At this point, we are not sure if there’s an on-going issues with S8 devices causing wireless chargers to behave erratically or not. We checked at least 2 S8 wireless chargers and both of them are working just fine. What’s happening is probably isolated to your device.

If your wireless charger no longer works (won’t charge your S8) at this time, then you should do some troubleshooting steps to see where the issue lies. If you’re positive that the charger was fine before you installed an update to your phone, there may be a software issue with your S8 and not necessarily the charger itself. Obviously, your wireless charger can’t be updated so any glitch affecting it must be coming externally, in this situation, your S8. Unless your wireless charger has a hardware problem, all troubleshooting must be focused on your phone. Below are the things that you need to do to address the issue.

Use another official Galaxy S8 wireless charger

Although we already think that the problem must be outside of the wireless charger itself, you still need to confirm it yourself. And there’s no better way to do that than by using another known working wireless charger. We know there are many good after market chargers out there but we highly recommend that you limit yourself to official Samsung wireless chargers. Keep in mind that when we say wireless charger, we’re referring not just to the wireless pad but also to the USB cable and adapter. If you can’t secure another wireless charger, try to visit a Samsung store and see if they can let you borrow an official charger for an S8. Because you’re having an issue with a Samsung wireless charger, make sure that you only test another official wireless charging for troubleshooting purposes.

If your S8 charges fine using a second wireless charger, that means that you have a bad wireless charger. You need to replace it if you want to resolve the issue.

On the other hand, if your S8 remains problematic when charging using the second charger, there must be a problem within the phone itself. Make sure to follow our advice below.

Clear the cache partition

One of the common reasons why bugs develop after installing an update is a corrupted system cache. This is usually true if this cache gets corrupted after an update. To check if your S8 has a corrupted system cache, you need to clear the cache partition, where the system cache is stored. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key to highlight “wipe cache partition.”
  5. Press the Power key to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key to highlight “yes” and press the Power key to select.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.
  9. Wirelessly charge your S8 and check for the problem.

Charge on Safe Mode

Should nothing change after wiping your S8’s cache partition, the next good thing that you can do is charge your phone when it’s on safe mode. The aim of this troubleshooting step is to check for possible third party app that may be interfering with Android operating system. Also known as diagnostic mode, safe mode, blocks all third party apps from running on your S8 so if your device charges wirelessly fine, that’s a clear sign that one of your apps is to blame.

To run your S8 to safe mode:

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
  3. When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.
  7. Allow your phone to run for a few minutes and check for the problem.

If you think that there’s an app issue, you can try to identify it by following these steps:

  1. Boot to safe mode.
  2. Check for the problem.
  3. Once you’ve confirmed that a third party app is to blame, you can start uninstalling apps individually. We suggest that you begin with the most recent ones you added.
  4. After you uninstall an app, restart the phone to normal mode and check for the problem.
  5. If your J3 is still problematic, repeat steps 1-4.

Factory reset

Ultimately, you need to wipe your phone by doing a factory reset should nothing ever work. This is the only way to fix whatever software bug is causing this charging problem of yours. Since you’ve already established the fact that your wireless charger is working at this point, then there must be something in your phone that prevents it from charging wirelessly. With a newly factory reset device, you can be sure that all software settings are refreshed. We know for a fact that this problem is not there when all software settings are in their factory defaults so this is the best way to know if your S8 has a software problem or not.

To factory reset your S8:

  1. Make a backup of your personal data.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Get Samsung support

If the problem stays even after you factory reset your S8, it means that a hardware malfunction is most probably behind the trouble. If wireless charging function is important for you, you should consult Samsung for a solution. They’ll most likely end up asking you to submit your device for examination and repair.

Problem #2: Galaxy S8 drains battery fast even when charging, fast charge not working anymore

My Samsung S8 has started to run low on battery. If charging from 30% and an app is on it drains to 0% while charging.

Also it no longer charges fast even when it is switched off. Within minutes now my battery was 34 only using chrome and is down to 16 in less than 10 minutes. Never been like this before Lots of apps even whatsapp is not working on the background. Can a battery be replaced if required to do so? Or how do I solve this problem please. Thank you. — Mrsmmari

Solution: Hi Mrsmmari. Given that there are at least two symptoms happening on your S8 at this time (fast battery drain and fast charge not working), we say the problem is most probably due to a damaged charging port than a bad battery. The two issues you mention are usually the common signs of a charging port malfunction. Unfortunately, whether you have a broken charging port or a bad battery, you’ll still need professional help so you’ll most probably end up with repair in any of these cases.

To confirm that this is not a software issue, make sure that you recalibrate Android and the battery first. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Drain the battery completely. This means using your device until it powers down by its own and the battery level reads 0%.
  2. Charge the phone until it reaches 100%. Be sure to use original charging equipment for your device and let it charge up completely. Do not unplug your device for at least two more hours and also don’t use it while charging.
  3. After the elapsed time, unplug your device.
  4. Perform a warm restart by holding the Power and Home buttons simultaneously until the startup logo appears.
  5. Use your phone until it completely runs out of power again.
  6. Repeat steps 1-5.

Battery calibration is used if your device no longer shows the correct battery levels, or if battery has become erratic after charging like in your situation. If that won’t help in fixing the problem though, you should then do the factory reset trick.

If both software solutions won’t resolve your issue at all and you want a permanent fix for the problem, you need to let Samsung take a look at the device so they can recommend repair or replacement for it.

Alternatively, you can use your phone’s wireless fast charging capability if you don’t want to go through Samsung’s repair process. Wireless fast charge is slower than fast cable charging but it’s the only good choice for you if you don’t want to send the phone in.
