5 Best Games Like EVE Online

Games like EVE Online are often hard to come by. The game allows you to explore an expansive galaxy, traveling from solar system to solar system. The sandbox MMO allows you to build your own spaceship, recruit a fleet, and then you, the master of that fleet, can choose from a number of of in-game professions. There are options like mining, piracy, manufacturing, trading, exploration, and, of course, combat. EVE Online is an extremely immersive world; however, if you’re getting tired of the game, you might be looking for something that can take its place.

Like we mentioned, games like EVE Online are hard to come by, but you do have plenty of different options, mostly single-player offline options, but space-like games nonetheless. Let’s dive right in.

Elite: Dangerous

Coming up as number one on our countdown, and the game that gets closest to EVE Online’s style, is Elite: Dangerous. This one is an MMO as well, so you have tons of players that you can explore the galaxy with. Elite: Dangerous actually says that there are around 400 billion star systems that players will be able to discover. And the best part? It’s all at an incredible 1:1 scale, with a full galactic and technological simulation based on real scientific principles.

You’ll be able to take control of your own starship, and earn the skill, knowledge, wealth and power to stand among the elite within the Elite: Dangerous galaxy.

X3: Terran Conflict

X3: Terran Conflict is a little older, but if you’re looking for a space-style sandbox, then it will be right up your alley. It has a massive dynamic universe that is constantly growing. There’s a riveting story line inside, which will take you all through the games universe, only to end up a dramatic finale.

There’s just so much to this game — players can choose missions as a freelance pilot, live outside the law as a rogue pirate or smuggler, and they can even become a military juggernaut to dominate the galaxies. Or, players can ascend to economic success as a powerful merchant, flaunting your power and wealth wherever you go. Finally, you also have the option of going on immersive adventures that could put you in the role of savior of the universe. If you’re looking for a fun world to explore, X3: Terran Conflict will be right up your alley.

Star Conflict

In third place on our list, we have game called Star Conflict. If you’re looking for another MMO, Star Conflict will be right up in your wheelhouse. The game isn’t necessarily a sandbox like EVE Online is; however, it is a simulation where you play as an Elite Pilot constantly engages in inter-galactic warfare. There’s some quests and missions that you can take part in; however, Star Conflict is, for the most part, a player-versus-player arena.

Perpetuum

Perpetuum comes up as number two on our countdown. Available only on Steam, Perpetuum is a persistent, sandbox, single server, massively multiplayer sci-fi RPG (MMORPG). The game is still available to buy; however, official servers have been shut down. You can still create your own server and put the game on it, which does require some tinkering.

However, players will be able to control massive robots and mechs, fight for access to an alien planet’s resources and knowledge, amass huge wealth and economic advantage, or even claim part of the world for yourself using terraforming and complex infrastructure. It’s literally a sandbox galaxy, and anything goes.

Evochron Mercenary

Evochron Mercenary comes up as our number one choice, and is another only available through Steam. There is no online play here; however, you do have a massive single-player world that will keep you busy for weeks. Trading commodities while sneaking past enemies, racing the best pilots, mining for diamonds, negotiating for survival, spying for a energy company, cleaning dirty solar arrays, transporting passengers, these are all awesome features and events that make up Evochron Mercenary. There isn’t much customization and control in that you are always a mercenary; however, you can choose to do things like work under contract or play freestyle.

Verdict

As you can see, there are a lot of games that have a space theme to them. There are many that aren’t literal clones to EVE Online, simply because it’s difficult to make a space sandbox MMO, as well as make it profitable. However, if you’re fine with games that simply focus on that space-like theme, these five are all great experiences.
