My Samsung Galaxy A40 keeps freezing. Here’s how you fix it.

Some owners of the Samsung Galaxy A40 have been complaining because their phones reportedly started to have performance issues. Troubleshooting a Galaxy A40 that keeps freezing

Performance issues may occur from time to time but it doesn’t mean they’re serious. Sometimes they’re caused by some apps you downloaded and installed and sometimes, they occur due to some minor firmware problems. With that being said, here are the things I suggest you do to try and fix your phone that keeps freezing…

First solution: Force reboot your phone first

Regardless whether your phone would respond or not after it freezes, this must be the first thing you have to do as it will force your phone to turn off and power back on. It will also refresh your device’s memory and reload all its apps and services. If the freezes are caused by some minor firmware issues or glitches, then this procedure should fix them. Here’s what you have to do: 

  1. Press and hold the volume down button first and don’t release. 
  2. While holding down the volume button, press and hold the power key as well. 
  3. Keep both keys held down together until the Galaxy A40 logo shows on the screen. 

Continue using your phone like you normally do and see if the freezes still occur. If they still do, then try the next solution.

Second solution: Run your phone in Safe Mode

By running your phone in safe mode, you’re temporarily disabling all third-party applications but doing this won’t fix the problem, it will just give you an idea what causes the problem. As I said earlier, it’s possible that the problem is caused by applications and doing this will tell you if those apps are third-party or pre-installed. Follow these steps to restart your phone in safe mode: 

  1. Press and hold the Power key until power options show. 
  2. Tap and hold the Power off option until Safe mode shows on the screen.
  3. Tap Safe mode to reboot your phone into safe mode. 

While in this mode, try to see if your Galaxy A40 still keeps freezing because if it still does, then skip to the next procedure. However, if your phone no longer freezes when your device is in this environment, then it means that it’s caused by a third-party app. In this case, you have to find out which app causes the problem and then uninstall it.

Third solution: Reset Settings of your phone

This procedure will bring your phone back to its default or factory settings. It gives you the benefits of a factory reset only that it won’t delete your personal files and data. In other words, it’s effective but you don’t have to go through the hassle of creating a backup of your important files and data. You may be able to fix the problem by doing this and here’s how it’s done: 

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to pull the notification panel down.
  2. Touch the Settings icon on the top-right corner of the screen. 
  3. Scroll to and tap General management. 
  4. Tap Reset. 
  5. Touch Reset settings. 
  6. Tap Reset settings again. 
  7. Enter your PIN, password or pattern. 
  8. Touch Reset. 

After this, continue using your phone to know if it still keeps freezing and if it still does, then move on to the next solution. 

Fourth solution: Delete the system cache

If your phone keeps freezing or has performance issues, then it’s possible that the system cache is corrupt. The system cache is actually a collection of small files that’s used by the firmware to make your phone run smoothly. It’s recommended to delete the system cache every now and then so that it will be replaced with a new one and here’s how it’s done: 

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up and Power keys.
  3. When the Galaxy A40 logo shows, release all three keys.
  4. Your Galaxy A40 will continue to boot up into the Recovery Mode. Once you see a black screen with blue and yellow texts, proceed to the next step. 
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  6. Press Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Continue using your phone to know if it still keeps freezing because if so, then the next procedure has to be done. 

Fifth solution: Backup your files and reset your phone

Performance issues can always be fixed by a master reset but we often suggest this procedure after exhausting all possible solutions as you may lose some important files and data. However, after doing the procedures above and your phone still keeps freezing, then you have no other choice but to do this. But before the reset, make sure to create a backup of your important files and data as they will be deleted during the process. After that, remove your Google and Samsung accounts so that you won’t be locked out after the reset. Here’s how to perform the master reset: 

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up and Power keys.
  3. When the Galaxy A40 logo shows, release all three keys.
  4. Your Galaxy A40 will continue to boot up into the Recovery Mode. Once you see a black screen with blue and yellow texts, proceed to the next step. 
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.
