Troubleshooting a Galaxy A40 with ‘Facebook keeps stopping’ error

This error message might be very annoying, especially to owners of the phone that use Facebook on a daily basis, but it’s not necessarily that hard to fix. In fact, you may only need to do a couple of procedures to fix this problem and that’s what we’re going to do here. So, with that being said, here are the things that you need to do about this problem.

First solution: Perform the Forced Restart

If this is the first time that you got the error message when you open Facebook, then this must be the first thing that you have to do. It is possible that the facebook crashed due to a minor firmware issue or glitch. This method is actually a simulated battery removal that will refresh your device’s memory and reload all services. Here’s how you do it:

  1. Press and hold the Volume Down button and don’t release it yet.
  2. While holding down the volume button, press and hold the Power key as well.
  3. Keep both keys held down together for 15 seconds or until the Galaxy A40 logo shows on the screen.

After your phone has finished rebooting, open the app and see if the ‘Facebook keeps stopping’ error still shows up. If it still does, then try the next solution.

Second solution: Clear the cache and data of Facebook app

This procedure will have a direct impact on the app. Clearing the cache and data will result in an app reset. It deletes the app’s cache and data files and if this is just a problem with the app, then this procedure should be able to fix it. Here’s how it’s done on your Galaxy A40:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to pull the notification panel down.
  2. Tap the Settings icon on the upper-right corner.
  3. Scroll to and then tap Apps.
  4. Find and tap APP NAME.
  5. Tap Storage.
  6. Touch Clear cache.
  7. Touch Clear data and then tap OK to confirm.

Once the app reset is done, open the app again to see if the ‘Facebook keeps stopping’ error still shows.

Third solution: Find out if it’s caused by third-party applications

There are times when downloaded apps cause pre-installed applications to crash. That’s the reason why you need to restart your phone in safe mode. Doing so will temporarily disable all third-party applications and if the problem doesn’t occur while the phone is in that mode, then it’s confirmed that a third-party application is caused facebook to stop working. Here’s how you restart your Galaxy A40 in safe mode:

  1. Press and hold the Power key until options show.
  2. Tap and hold the Power off option until it changes into Safe Mode.
  3. Tap the Safe mode icon to restart your device.
  4. Once the reboot is successful, you should see ‘Safe mode’ at the lower-left corner of the screen.

You should still be able to use Facebook while in safe mode and assuming that the problem is fixed, here’s what you should do next:

  1. Restart your phone normal to boot into standard mode.
  2. Remember the apps you installed about the time when the phone started to show the ‘Facebook keeps stopping’ error.
  3. Once you already have an app in mind, swipe down from the top of the screen to pull the notification panel down.
  4. Tap the Settings icon on the upper-right corner.
  5. Scroll to and then tap Apps.
  6. Find and tap suspected app.
  7. Tap Storage.
  8. Touch Clear data and tap OK to confirm.
  9. Tap the back key once and then touch Uninstall.
  10. Confirm that you want to remove the app from your phone.

However, if your Galaxy A40 still shows the same error even in safe mode, then move on to the next solution.

Fourth solution: Reset all settings

Being one of the pre-installed apps, Facebook can be affected if there are some inconsistencies in the settings of your device. So to rule this possibility out, reset all settings of your phone and see if the problem continues after that. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to pull the notification panel down.
  2. Tap the Settings icon on the upper-right corner.
  3. Scroll to and tap General management.
  4. Touch Reset.
  5. Tap Reset settings.
  6. Tap the Reset settings button.
  7. If prompted, enter your PIN, Password or Pattern.
  8. Finally, tap Reset.

Should the error ‘Facebook keeps stopping’ continue to show up after this procedure, then try the next solution.

Fifth solution: Delete the old system cache

One of the causes of an app crash is when there are some cache files in your phone’s cache partition that got corrupted. These files are pretty small but they’re important in keeping your phone’s performance in check as well as the operation of all applications. If these files get corrupted, odds are that your phone may encounter some performance issues, which include app crashes. To rule this out, here’s what you should do:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up and Power keys.
  3. When the Galaxy A40 logo shows, release all three keys.
  4. Your Galaxy A40 will continue to boot up into the Recovery Mode. Once you see a black screen with blue and yellow texts, proceed to the next step.
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  6. Press Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Once the reboot is complete, try to see if the error ‘Facebook keeps stopping’ still shows.

Sixth solution: Master reset your phone

A master reset will fix this problem as long as the firmware has not been modified in any way. However, all your files and data will be deleted if you did this, so make sure to create a backup prior to the reset. Also, it’s recommended that you remove your google account prior to the reset so that you won’t be locked out of your device. When ready, follow these steps to reset your phone:

  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.
