Troubleshooting Moto G7 that’s running slow

For you to accurately diagnose this problem and fix it, you have to be systematic in your troubleshooting. We start ruling out minor possibilities or procedures that have minor impacts on your phone and not delete your files and data. With that being said, here’s what you should do:

First solution: Do the Forced Restart to fix phone that’s running slow

You should perform the forced restart before anything else, especially if you’re dealing with a performance-related problem. It’s because most of the time, such problem is just a result of a minor issue with the firmware. It’s something that can be fixed by doing the forced reboot, a simulated battery removal that will refresh your phone’s memory and reload its applications and services. This is how you do it on your Moto G7 that’s running slow:

  • Press and hold the power key for 15 seconds or until the Moto logo shows and the screen turns blue.

Once the phone has finished restarting, try to see if it’s still running slow or if the performance has improved. If you’re not satisfied with the performance, then move on to the next solution.

Second solution: Run phone in safe mode and observe

By running the phone in safe mode, you will immediately isolate the problem if it’s caused by an app. In safe mode, all third party applications are temporarily disabled. If the phone is running normally while in this mode, then it means that one or some of the apps you personally downloaded and installed is causing the problem, and that makes the problem a lot easier to fix. Here’s how you restart your Moto G7 in safe mode:

  1. Press and hold the power key for a couple of seconds until options show.
  2. Touch and hold the Power off option until you’re prompted if you want to reboot in safe mode.
  3. Tap OK to confirm the reboot to safe mode.
  4. The text ‘safe mode’ will appear on the lower-left corner of the screen when successful.

While in this mode, try to observe your phone closely to know if it’s still running slow. If the problem is fixed, then it means it’s caused by a third party application. You have to follow these steps to probe further:

  1. Restart your phone normal to boot into standard mode.
  2. Remember the apps you installed about the time when the phone starts to reboot by itself.
  3. Pull the app drawer up and go the screen where the icon of the suspected app is located.
  4. Touch and hold the icon of suspected app until options show.
  5. Tap App Info.
  6. Touch Uninstall, and confirm that you really want to uninstall it.

You may have to uninstall more than one app to be able to fix this problem. On the other hand, if your phone is still running slow in safe mode, then move on to the next solution.

Third solution: Master Reset your Moto G7

After doing the aforementioned procedures and your Moto G7 is still running slow, then a reset will be necessary. A reset will fix any performance related issues but you have to make sure to create a copy of your important files and data as they will be deleted during the process. Also, after the backup, remove your google account so that you won’t be locked out of your device after the reset. When ready, follow these steps to reset your device:

  1. Power your Moto G7 off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key and the Volume down button for 3 seconds, or until you’re on a screen with a broken Android robot.
  3. Use the Volume Down or Up button to scroll RECOVERY MODE, and then press the power key to select it.
  4. The screen will turn blue with Motorola logo on it and brings you to another black screen with broken Android with exclamation point.
  5. Hold the Power button and press Volume up, and then release both buttons.
  6. Use the Volume Down button to highlight ‘Wipe data/factory reset’ and then press the power key to select it.
  7. Press the Volume Down button once to highlight ‘Yes’ and press the power key to select it.
  8. Highlight Userdata + personalized content using the volume down button, and then press the power key to select it.
  9. The reset will commence and once it’s finished, highlight Reboot system now and press the power key.
  10. Wait for your phone to finish rebooting and then set up your phone as a new device.

After you’ve finished resetting your phone, set it up as a new device.
