Sony Xperia 5 Now up for Pre-Order in the U.S

Sony took the wraps off the Xperia 5 at the IFA event last week. Well, the smartphone is now available for pre-order in the U.S. and parts of Europe. The smartphone is termed a “compact” flagship, which is a bit of a surprise as the phone packs a relatively large 6.1-inch display. While European customers are getting the phone in early October, U.S. customers who pre-ordered the handset will have to wait until November.

As for the hardware, the Xperia 5 is packing a 6.1-inch 2520 x 1080 resolution OLED display accompanied by the octa-core Snapdragon 855 chipset, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of expandable storage, triple 12MP rear cameras, an 8MP wide angle selfie camera, Android 9.0 Pie, and a 3,140 mAh battery with 18W fast charging support. The Xperia 5 also comes with a fingerprint scanner mounted on the side of the phone, which is something that we’ve seen with Sony phones in the past.

While multiple European retailers appear to be offering exciting promos and gifts like the WF-1000XM3 wireless noise canceling headphones, American retailers B&H Photo Video and Focus Camera aren’t offering any such promotions at the moment. Although it’s worth pointing out that the European promotion is only valid for the first 125 customers in the region.

Sony hasn’t made much of an impact on the American market with its recent lineup of handsets, although the manufacturer will hope things are different this time. The company also announced the bigger Xperia 1 flagship at IFA, which is up for pre-order carrying a price tag of $899. The Xperia 5, on the other hand, costs slightly less at $799.

It’s pretty clear that Sony’s reach in the U.S. is quite limited, although one can hope to find it fairly soon on sites like Amazon. What do you think about the Xperia 5?
