Before performing any of the recommended troubleshooting steps listed below you should try to restart the PS4 first as this will refresh its software. This simple step will usually fix most issues that you might encounter with the device.

Check power connections

The PS4 requires a stable power source to enable it to run smoothly. This is why you should check the power connections of the device.

  • Turn off the PS4 completely by pressing the power button for at least 7 seconds
  • Disconnect the power cable of the console from the power outlet.
  • Try using a different power cord.
  • Try plugging the power cord to a different outlet. Make sure to connect it directly to the outlet and not to an extension cord.

Prevent overheating

Your PS4 will run better if it is cool. If it is running hot then chances are the device will turn off. To make sure that overheating does not occur, perform the following steps.

  • Make sure your PS4 is in a well ventilated area and away from direct exposure to sunlight.
  • Check the fan of the PS4 to be sure it is not blocked – If the fan is blocked then it cannot dispel the hot air properly and will overheat and turn OFF. You should also make sure that the fan is spinning.
  • Use a can of compressed air to clean the air intake of the PS4 and use the compressed air where the fan is located to remove any dust or dirt buildup.

  • Turn off the PS4 completely by pressing the power button for at least 7 seconds
  • Disconnect the power cable from the electrical outlet and the cable. R
  • Slide the Hard Disk Drive bay cover (the shiny part) out and away from the system to remove it.
  • Check the hard drive to make sure it’s properly seated and properly screwed to the system.
  • You can try to swap the hard disk with a new one to check if the old one is causing the problem.

Update the software in Safe Mode

There are instances when an outdated software version can cause this problem. To eliminate this possibility you will need to make sure that the device is running on the latest software version.

  • Use a USB stick with at least 400 MB free space.
  • Format the USB using your computer then create a folder called PS4. Go inside this folder then create another folder called UPDATE.
  • Download the latest PS4 update from the official Playstation website
  • Copy the downloaded file to the UPDATE folder on your flash drive.
  • Turn off the PS4
  • Connect the USB stick to the PS4 through one of the forward-facing USB ports.
  • Hold the power button for at least 7 seconds, at this point the system will boot into Safe Mode.
  • In Safe Mode, select the third option which is “Update System Software” and you’ll be able to follow the directions with ease from there.

In case the above steps fails to fix the problem then you should bring the device to a Sony service center and have it fixed as this could already be caused by a faulty hardware component.
