Today’s problem: Galaxy S8 fast charge stopped working
My phone (Samsung Galaxy S8) recently started to display a message that water is dectected in the port and to let it dry before charging. I let it sit for a day and then i tried drying with a Q-tip and it still i a displaying the message. It hasn’t been in contact with water anytime recently. What I ended up doing is restarting the phone with the charger plugged in and the message went away, but the phone is no longer fast charging. — Derek
How to fix a Galaxy S8 that won’t fast charge anymore
Hello Derek. There’s no easy way to know what may be causing your problem. As far as our own experience is concerned, fast charging is not 100% reliable, even with barely used Galaxy S7 and S8 devices. Your issue may be caused by a unique variable in your device, or it may be caused by something else entirely. We’ve received reports about fast charge issue stopping late last year after Samsung released an update. The problem did not affect all S8 devices though and was not that widespread so there must be something in those affected devices that were not compatible with new Android versions.
To see what may be causing the problem, make sure that you do the steps below.
Enable fast charging
Fast charging can be toggled on and off. Make sure that your device has it enabled. This may be a simple step but a lot of people forget no-brainers. To check for fast charging feature, follow these steps:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap Device maintenance.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Advanced settings and toggle on Fast cable charging
Turn off the screen or phone when charging
As mentioned above, fast charge feature may not work in some cases. Even when the screen says fast charging is working, the device may not actually be getting all the benefits of fast charging. That’s because fast charging in some S8 devices we’ve come across may not work properly or at all when the screen is on. To maximize the chance of fast charging to work, you shouldn’t use your phone when charging and ensure that the screen is turned off. Better still, just leave your phone off for, say, an hour so fast charging works full time.
Use original charging cable and adapter
Samsung fast charge feature is only validated to work with the charging cable and adapter that came with your device. If you’re using a non-Samsung fast charger, there’s a chance that it may not be working, or is incompatible with your phone. Try to stick with Samsung accessories.
If you no longer have the Samsung charging cable and accessories, try to get replacements as soon as possible.
Try charging in safe mode
Bad or poorly coded third party apps may lead to problems. If you tend to install apps without checking the reputation of their developers, it’s only a matter of time before you’ll encounter problems. Whether you have a minor or major issue, one of the best things that you can do is to restart your phone to safe mode to see if one of your apps is the cause. In this mode, all third party apps will be prevented from running so if your phone will charge normally and fast, you definitely have an app issue. Try to let your phone run for 24 hours in safe mode to see a difference.
Here are the steps on how to restart your S8 to safe mode:
- Turn your phone off. To do this, press and hold the Power button and tap Power off.
- Press and hold the Power button to restart your phone.
- When the Samsung logo appears on screen, release the Power button, then press and hold the Volume down button.
- Continue to hold the Volume down key until your phone has finished restarting.
- The Safe Mode logo will appear at the bottom left of the screen when this is activated.
- Use your phone in Safe Mode in the same way as you normally would.
Install Android updates
Installing updates not only bring improvements but sometimes, patches for known bugs as well. Make sure you don’t miss on any updates for your device be it for apps or the operating system.
Make sure that charging port is dry
Since you mentioned that the issue appears to have coincided with your S8 showing moisture detected error, be sure dry the charging port properly. The charging port can get wet in a lot of ways, even if you did not intentionally dunk the device in water. There’s a reason why the moisture detected error was coded to your device in the first place. Before you disregard it, make sure that you check that the charging port is, indeed, dry.
To do that, simply put the phone near a thing that produces heat indirectly, like a back of a TV or computer. Water usually evaporates on its own but you can make it dry up quickly by placing your device near a heat source.
DO NOT put your S8 near an oven or furnace though. Doing so will not only be useless, but can also send your phone quickly to its grave. Applying direct heat to the charging port won’t work either. If you want to speed up the drying process, try using a hair dryer to blow hot air into the port. Don’t overdo it though to avoid putting too much heat inside. Keep in mind, too much heat and you’ll fry the components inside. The other drawback in doing this is the fact that air pressure may push moisture inside, especially if the water resistance feature has already been compromised. Even a tiny amount of moisture can damage a component/s inside.
Do a factory reset
Wiping your phone should be the last resort but we want you to do it if all the solutions above won’t help at all. Just remember to back your data up before doing it. Remember, factory reset won’t fix any hardware malfunction like a damaged battery, broken charging port, or some unknown logic board issues. Factory reset will only address software-related issues. If fast charging won’t still work after doing it, you should consult Samsung. They may repair or replace your phone for you.
To factory reset your S8, follow these steps:
- Back up data on the internal memory. If you have signed into a Google account on the device, you have activated Anti-theft and will need your Google credentials to finish the Master reset.
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
- Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe data / factory reset.
- Press Power button to select.
- Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
- Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
- When the master reset is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
Use wireless charger
If factory reset did not help and you want to hold off sending the phone in for a while, or for whatever reason, don’t forget that you can still fast charge wirelessly. Wireless charging is normally slower than cable charging but fast wireless charging can be give more boost compared to normal cable charging. Try using it to see if it works faster than normal cable charging, or if normal cable charging won’t work at all.
