How to fix LG V40 ThinQ won’t connect to public wifi issue (portal page won’t show)

Problem: LG V40 ThinQ won’t connect to public wifi (portal page won’t show)

I read on here to do a soft restart but i can’t figure out how to get the cover off of my lg v40 thinq to do that, any suggestions. The reason I want to try that is because so tried all of the other suggestions for wifi trouble except factory reset (that will be last resort) and nothing has worked. I can connect with no problem at home but not at work. I work in a hospital where they have open wifi if you accept the terms but I can’t even get that far when signing on. I try it automatically wants me to use my mobile network. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Solution: If the main issue is about your LG V40 ThinQ unable to connect to a public wifi, then these are the troubleshooting steps to try:

Forced reboot or soft restart

Some network problems are caused by a temporary bugs. These type of bugs usually go away after refreshing the system. Make sure to do a soft restart on your LG V40 ThinQ. Also known as forced reboot, this procedure mimics the effects of having pulled the battery out. It restarts the system and clears temporary memory (RAM). Here’s how it’s done:

Press and hold the Power button and Volume Down until the device powers off, approximately 8 seconds, then release.

Most of the time when this procedure is done, your phone will work properly but if not, then you still have other reset procedures below.

Clear cache partition

Sometimes, a phone may encounter bugs, app problems, or other annoyances when the system cache is corrupted. To check if there’s a system cache problem on your device, follow the steps below:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Tap the ‘General’ tab.
  3. Tap Storage > Internal storage.
  4. Wait for menu options to finish calculating.
  5. Tap Free up space.
  6. Tap Temporary files & raw files.
  7. Select the following options:
  8. Cached data
  9. Clip tray temporary files
  10. Raw files from camera
  11. Tap Delete > DELETE.

Clear cache and data of default browser

The default browser is the app that your device uses to pull up the authentication page of a public wifi network. Sometimes, a corrupted app cache can mess things up so you want to refresh the browser’s cache first.

Here’s how that’s done:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps & notifications.
  3. Tap App info.
  4. Tap the appropriate app (the default browser).
  5. Tap Storage.
  6. Tap Clear cache.

If nothing happens when after wiping the app cache, or if there’s no such option, you can then proceed to reverting the app to its defaults. Here’s how:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps & notifications.
  3. Tap App info.
  4. Tap the appropriate app (the default browser).
  5. Tap Storage.
  6. Tap Clear data.
  7. Restart the device.

Get portal login screen manually

Ideally, the authentication page or portal login page of a public wifi loads up automatically but if that doesn’t happen, you want to try to pull it up manually. Most wifi captive login page uses 192.168.1.1 so try to use that first. Just open your default browser, type in the IP address in the address bar and wait until the authentication page loads up. If your browser returns an error indicating that the IP address is not reachable or incorrect, get the authentication IP from your IT  department and try it again.

Reset network settings

This is a staple troubleshooting step when fixing any network problem. These are the items that are cleared when you reset your LG V40 ThinQ’s network settings to defaults:

  • Cellular and Wi-Fi network settings (including saved networks and passwords)
  • Bluetooth®
  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap System.
  3. Tap Restart & reset.
  4. Tap Network settings reset.
  5. Tap RESET SETTINGS.
  6. Tap Reset Settings.
  7. Restart the device.

Use another browser

In case there’s a problem with the browser you’re using, the next good thing to do at this point is replace the browser you have and see if that will make a difference. There are many browsers that you can use for this purpose. You can get them from Google Play Store. Start with popular ones like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, etc. Make sure to set the newly installed browser as the default before attempting to connect your LG V40 ThinQ to your hospital wifi.

Get help from your IT department

If your LG V40 ThinQ does not have a problem connecting to other wifi networks, then it’s possible that your hospital IT guys may be restricting the number of devices that can use the wifi at any given time. If that’s not that, there may be a new policy that blocks unknown devices from connecting. These are just some of basic scenarios so you have to talk to your IT personnel to know the real deal.
