It looks like Samsung will be manufacturing Qualcomm’s next-gen chipsets. The Korean-based tech giant secured a contract with Qualcomm, where it will be making the Snapdragon 865 SoCs for next-gen smartphones.
It’s actually a surprise move, since TSMC is usually able to snag these contracts. It sounds like Samsung was ahead of TSMC on getting the contract, but might also have a more mature manufacturing process.
The Snapdragon 865 will be manufactured on Samsung’s 7nm EUV process, and production will start by the end of 2019.
Obviously we’re seeing Snapdragon 855 phones right now, so it’s going to be some time before we actually see one with the Snapdragon 865 in it. There are rumors that the Note 10 will sport it, but that might not be the case, based on this report.
