Galaxy S8 screen turns black when posting or watching videos on Instagram

Some #GalaxyS8 users have reached out to us about their Instagram app not working properly lately. Specifically, they said that their S8 screen turns black when posting or watching videos on Instagram. We don’t work for Instagram and we are not aware of any Instagram-specific bugs so all we can tell you to do in this post are generic solutions for any app issue. We hope you’ll find this post helpful in fixing your own Instagram problem.

Solution #1: Close and re-open Instagram app

Apps can sometimes encountered internal errors they can’t recover from. The result from such can range from a minor glitch to a significant annoying problem that may involve the operating system. Most app issues are user fixable though and one of the basic things that you can do is to close the problematic app, then relaunch it. Your case is no exception so you must try to see what happens when you close, then re-open your Instagram app. Here’s how to do that:

  1. View the most recently used apps by tapping the Recent apps button (located on the left of the Bixby button) and scroll through the list of apps. Note: To display the icon, tap the lower-left corner of the device.
  2. Find Instagram app.
  3. To close the app, tap and hold it, then swipe the screen left or right.
  4. Afterwards, open Instagram again and see how it works when trying to post something or when you play a video.

Solution #2: Enable Smart Stay feature

For some users, enabling Smart Stay feature while watching a video prevents the screen from blacking out. This is, in fact, the reason why Smart Stay was introduced by Samsung — to prevent the screen from timing out while you’re using it. To see if enabling Smart Stay will help, follow the steps below on how to turn it on:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Display.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom and look for Smart Stay.
  4. Tap Smart Stay option.
  5. Move the slider for Smart Stay to the right to turn it on.

Remember, Smart Stay feature uses the front camera to detect your face. As long as it you’re looking at the screen and the front camera captures your face, the screen should stay on. This may not help in preventing the screen from turning black when posting on Instagram but it may when you’re watching a video.

Solution #3: Set screen timeout to longer interval

Another workaround to prevent the screen from turning black while you’re using it like when you’re watching a video is by choosing a longer Screen Timeout option. To do this, you must do the following:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Display.
  3. Tap Screen Timeout.
  4. Select the longest Screen timeout option (10 minutes).
  5. Check if the issue returns.

Solution #4: Force Stop Instagram

If your S8 screen only turns black when posting or watching videos on Instagram, the next good thing to do is to use the Force Stop option to interrupt the app when it’s running. You can do that by following these steps:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Find and tap Instagram.
  4. Tap FORCE STOP button.

Solution #5: Clear Instagram app cache and data

Force stopping an app is basically restarting it. If Instagram is still problematic at this time, the next troubleshooting step for you is to delete the app’s cache and data. Try wiping the app’s cache first and see how it works afterwards. If that won’t help, then go ahead and delete its data. Here’s how:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Find and tap Instagram.
  4. Tap Storage.
  5. Tap Clear Cache button.
  6. Close Instagram app by by following Solution #1.
  7. If this won’t fix the issue, repeat steps 1-4 and select Clear Data.

Solution #6: Uninstall updates for Instagram

Sometimes, reverting the app to its default settings help in fixing issues. That’s because app updates, just like Android updates, may also bring with them coding issues. To see if your Instagram app will work fine when it’s not updated, follow the steps below:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Find and tap Instagram.
  4. Under the Application Info page, tap the Options icon at the upper right.
  5. Select the only option that says Uninstall Updates.
  6. If prompted whether or not you want to revert the app to its factory version, tap OK.

Solution #7: Reinstall Instagram

Another good way to deal with any app-specific issue is by re-installing the said app. Your Instagram issue is no exception so be sure to delete the app, then install it again from Play Store.

To delete an app, just go under Settings > Apps, find the Instagram app and tap it, then tap App details in store. You’ll then be redirected to the Play Store download page of Instagram. To uninstall it, simply tap on UNINSTALL button.

Solution #8: Check for updates

If you don’t often install updates for your apps, some of them may become problematic over time, especially come a new Android operating system version. Make sure that the operating system and all your apps, including Instagram are all up-to-date.

Solution #9: Report the issue to the developer

If the issue remains after doing all our suggestions above, there’s probably a coding problem with the app that are beyond a user’s ability to fix. To report the glitch, you can go under Instagram’s settings menu by doing these steps:

  1. Open Instagram app.
  2. Tap the Profile icon at the bottom right.
  3. Tap the three-dot icon at the upper right.
  4. Scroll down and tap on Report a Problem link.
  5. Then, tap on Report a Problem.
  6. Make sure to provide a detailed description of the problem including the changes you made to the device before you started experiencing the symptoms. This report will be forwarded to Instagram’s developer team and it may or may not be able get  the attention it deserves from them. Keep in mind that there are millions of Instagram users out there and if this issue is as pervasive as we may think, then it may help in “voting up” the ticket you just created.

In the meantime, don’t be too hopeful that Instagram developers will do something about your report right away. Just relax, take your time, and be patient. If you’re lucky, a patch may be released during the next update.
