5 Best Chromeboxes For Turning Any Monitor Into A Computer

If you’re looking for a way to turn any monitor into a computer, the Chromebox might be the perfect solution. Chromeboxes are portable mini computers that you can take with you anywhere, allowing you to turn a monitor into a computer (with the Chrome OS operating system), so long as you have a mouse and keyboard to connect to the Chromebox. Chromeboxes are also excellent solutions for small businesses, allowing them to buy up a bunch at a much cheaper price than they would a traditional computer setup. If a regular computer package (monitor included) costs $800 a pop, Chromeboxes (with separate monitor purchase) can cost you a whole lot less, probably around half.

If the Chromebox has piqued you’re interest, follow along below, and we’ll show you the best ones you can get your hands on today.

Acer CX12-2GKM

The Acer CX12-2GKM Chromebox has a lot of great hardware in it. You get an Intel Celeron 3205U clocked at 1.5GHz, 2GB of DDR3 memory, a 16GB Solid State Drive as well as integrated Intel Graphics. This is one of the higher-end models, coming with four USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI port, a DisplayPort, and a microSD card for expanding storage.

The neat thing about this specific Chromebox is that it comes with a keyboard and mouse, removing the need to pick them up from the store. It adds much more value for money in this package.

You can pick up this model for $175 on Amazon, but if you’d like something with a little more memory, a model with 4GB of memory is available for a little more at $200.

ASUS M004U

ASUS also offers an excellent Chromebook with decent hardware. It’s equipped with a Intel Celeron 2955U clocked at 1.4GHz, 2GB of DDR3 memory, a 16GB Solid State Drive/Hard Disk Drive hybrid, integrated Intel HD Graphics, and it’s, of course, running Google’s Chrome OS. There are different combinations available, allowing you to get a faster processor or more memory.

Unlike the above Acer model, the ASUS M004U does not have an included keyboard and mouse; however, the base model will only set you back $150. That price can quickly go up, depending on the hardware combination you choose, though.

HP J5N50UT

The HP J5N50UT has the same processor as the ASUS model — a Intel Celeron 2955U, but is equipped with double the memory at 4GB. You also get a 16GB Solid State Drive, 4 USB ports, HDMI and an Ethernet port. Chrome OS is included, and supposedly, the J5N50UT will soon be getting a version of Chrome OS that runs Android applications, increasing its functionality exponentially.

You can pick up this one off of Amazon for just over $200.

Lenovo ThinkCentre Chromebox

The ThinkCentre Chromebox from Lenovo might be the best option on this list, sporting a high-end (for Chromeboxes) Intel Celeron 3205U processor clocked at 1.5GHz with 2MB of L3 cache, 4GB of DDR3 memory, a 16GB Solid State Drive, integrated Intel HD Graphics, and a built-in Gigabit Ethernet port.

With it, you get two USB 3.0 ports, two regular USB ports, an HDMI port and a DisplayPort. Lenovo’s box actually can support two displays at the same time, allowing for much greater work efficiency. On top of that, this package comes with an included mouse and keyboard.

You can pick up Lenovo’s option off of Amazon for just $200; it’s great value for money, when you pit it against the rest on this list.

ASUS Chromebit CS10

Last up on our list is the Chromebit CS10 from ASUS, and one of its best features its sheer portability. It only has a single HDMI port and a single USB port, but because it’s in the form of a stick, you can take this “Chromebox” anywhere with you, turning any monitor into a home computer. You obviously use the HDMI portion to connect it to a monitor, but the single USB port will allow you to connect up a peripheral for using the computer. You can even pick up an adapter that allows for two USB slots.

You can pick this up on Amazon for just $85.

Verdict

Any Chromebox you pick on this list will work just fine and operate at lightning speeds. However, if you want something with more portability, the Chromebit CS10 is your best option, but you do sacrifice some much-needed USB ports for that portability. Ultimately, it’s up to you and what you need out of a Chromebox.
