Orange Holiday SIM

Orange is up first. We love Orange's Holiday SIM, offering you fast 4G data in thirty different countries within the EU. Italy, being one of the most popular EU destinations, is one of those included in the package. However, this will work in most big tourist destinations within the EU.

The Orange Holiday SIM costs around $49.99, but gives you 10GB of total data to use for 14 days. There's two hours of talk time, and then another 1,000 messages included, too. That's a pretty sweet deal, considering that data in the US costs $10 to $15 per 1GB, where here you're only paying $5 per 1GB. They allow you to easily top up when you're running out, too.

UK Europe ThreeUK SIM Card

ThreeUK offers something that they're calling the UK Europe SIM Card. Designed for international European travel, this is an excellent choice for traveling through Italy. A Pay As You Go option, you get 12GB of data, 3000 voice minutes, and 3000 available text messages. You can top up as needed as well.

While this does work in the UK, ThreeUK designed this to work throughout most European countries as well. That said, using this in Italy will be a breeze. Once you set it in your phone and activate it, your device will automatically connect up to the necessary network during your travels in Italy.

Mobal Europe Plus SIM

Second on our countdown, we're looking at the Mobal Europe Plus SIM. Mobal gives you 1GB of free data, and with it, unrestricted tethering. This comes in as one of the best offers on our list, as hotspot tethering features usually cost extra.

Mobal allows you to accept calls from people in over 130 different countries, including text messages. These are all free, but they do charge for outgoing calls and texts. It's a little pricier than local SIM cards in the area, but Mobal's rates are still competitive -- they sit at 30¢ per minute in all countries, including Italy. It's still less expensive than roaming charges in the US, but pricey as far as local options go.

Internet with legs Trio

ThreeUK has another nice international SIM card for Italy travel. Dubbed The Internet with legs Trio, this is another pay as you go SIM card. You actually get up to 3GB of data for 90 days. The SIM will work in any mobile Wi-Fi device, tablets and smartphones alike. While 3GB isn't much for 90 days of travel, they allow you to top up as needed.

ThreeUK allows you to roam the USA without any extra charges as well. This is a particular nice feature, because this allows you to test their SIM card with your phone before committing to it in Italy.

Keepgo Global Lifetime SIM Card

Finally, we have Keepgo's own Global Lifetime SIM card. Sure, we've got it listed as last on our list, but it's still an excellent choice for those that are looking to travel to Italy. The options from Orange and ThreeUK are definitely better here, but this one still isn't bad, because they want to give customers data wherever they are in the world, including those visiting Italy! Keepgo gives you 1GB of data that stays valid for 1 year -- and you can refill as you need it.

However, do keep in mind that only works with GSM phones. There's a SIM adapter thrown in, allowing you to ensure this works with any GSM phone. This doesn't come with a calling or texting plan.

Verdict

As you can see, there are tons of excellent SIM cards that you can use in Italy and within the EU as a whole. The option from Orange probably has the best support, as well as the most value for money.
