Amazon’s new Fire 7 tablets are here, and with some major upgrades

Amazon’s Fire 7 tablets have been due for a refresh for awhile now, and finally got one. The company says that they will retain their $49 price point — and lower during sale times — but come with some much-needed upgrades.

On the outside, not a whole lot has changed. The new generation of Amazon Fire 7 tablets keep essentially the same design, but come with better hardware. Storage has doubled to 16GB this time around, and there’s a better processor backed by increased memory bandwidth.

You still get the quad-core processor clocked at 1.3GHz speeds, but Amazon says that it should perform much better. The kid-friendly Fire 7 comes with the same upgrade, in addition to an adjustable hinge that also works as a kickstand. The kids-friendly edition will, however, come in at $99.

The standard Fire 7 actually comes with a number of new color options as well.

These tablets aren’t available just yet, but will official land on June 6.
