5 Best International SIM Card For Traveling to Switzerland

We hear about the Swiss in Switzerland all the time, mostly through American movies and entertainment; however, one thing that stays consistent between all of that is the gorgeous landscapes that Switzerland has to offer. It's a mountainous country, and many of its cities still have a medieval vibe to them. Of course, Swiss is also known for its watches, chocolate, and prowess in banking and finance industries. Suffice to say, there's quite a culture to explore there.

But, before you go -- you'll want to make sure you pick up an international SIM card for your phone. Roaming will leave you with very little cellular speed, not doing a very great job at keeping you in touch with family and friends. A local, international SIM card on the other hand, will save you money and give you plenty of 4G LTE speed while abroad.

Not sure what to pick up? Here are five of our favorites.

Orange Holiday SIM

Coming up as our number one choice, we have the Orange Holiday SIM. This is one of our favorites, with the company actually based out of France. They provide tourists 4G LTE data across 30 popular Europoean destinations, with Switzerland being one of those. You'll get fast, reliable data almost anywhere in Europe, but particularly around the larger cities. Since it offers data in all of those countries, you don't have to worry about losing reception when you fly from country to country, or if you decide to visit another while you're there.

Orange's Holiday SIM has a whole 10GB of data to use, and on top of that there's also two hours of talk time, and then another 1,000 SMS messages to use in addition to your data. That's way different than many local and international SIM cards, since many European options are going the data-only route.

The card only lasts 14 days after activation, but you can call them up or go online to add more days if you decide to extend your stay.

UK Europe ThreeUK SIM Card

ThreeUK is up next on our list, sitting in third place. We like this one a lot because it's the most similar to the Orange Holiday SIM, giving you talk, text, and data. That said, your purchase gets you a whole 12GB of data, 3000 minutes in talk time and 3000 messages to use while in Switzerland for up to thirty days. Since you have calling and text features here, you don't have to rely on social platforms for your communication, and thus, might have better data efficiency.

There are some restrictions on what you can do with this SIM card, however. ThreeUK only allows you to use this with phones -- you can't insert it into tablets or any other Wi-Fi device. You also can't stream video with this one either, nor use it in a mobile hotspot form.

When you're running low on data, ThreeUK does allow you to refill; however, you can also add days to your SIM card plan so that it doesn't expire if you decide to extend your trip.

Mobal Europe Plus SIM

In second place, Mobal is another excellent performer for your Swiss vacation. Once you order the SIM card, they actually give you 1GB of data to use in Switzerland or another European country; however, once that's used up, you'll have to pay for each 1GB used. That pits this as one of the pricier SIM cards, but could end up being cheaper depending on the amount of data you use. Prices are similar to here in the US, where data is $10 per gig. In addition, you'll have to pay for talk and text minutes as well, which are 30 cents per minute.

That said, this SIM card ends up being a little bit pricier, and requires you to have your credit or debit card attached. When the end of the period comes. that credit or debit card is automatically charged for the amount.

Internet with legs Trio

ThreeUK offers another SIM card that they call the Internet with Legs. This one is significantly more limited than the last option highlighed, as this one is exclusively data-only. That means you have to rely on your data for a lot of communication -- through platforms like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp --  which means you're using more data. Depending on how much you use, that could make this SIM card a little pricier, based on how much you have to refill.

That said, the SIM card comes out of the box with 3GB of data to use while in Switzerland, but obviously, can be topped off with more data whenever needed. Data still sits at 4G LTE speeds, which still keeps things moving quick.

There's roaming in the United States for no extra charge. That's really nice, because it allows you to sort of take the SIM card for a test run before using it abroad.

Keepgo Global Lifetime SIM Card

Coming up last on our countdown, we're looking at Keepgo's Global Lifetime card. They will bring you fast 4G LTE speeds in Switzerland, and is most ideal for these that don't need a massive amount of data. That's because, instead of offering you a chunk of data, Keepgo charges you per gig used. However, you do get a free 1GB to use after your purchase. Use up that data, and then anything after is $10 per 1GB.

Since this SIM card only supports data, you'll have to rely on your data for communication more, since it doesn't support actual phone calls or text.

Verdict

As you can see, there are plenty of great SIM cards for traveling abroad; however, the Orange Holiday SIM is the best that you can get, providing you talk, text, and data, whereas many so-called "international" SIM cards today are pitted as data-only.
