Depending on carrier rates, you could be spending thousands, just to stay in touch with friends and family while abroad!

Not sure what the best choices are for your phone in Sri Lanka? Here are a few that will work quite well in one of Asia's most popular destinations.

ThreeUK Smart Silver

One of the best SIM cards that you can pick up for Sri Lanka today is the Smart Silver. It's one of the cheapest choices on the market, and without sacrificing quality. Starting at just $30, it's a lot cheaper than carrier chargers.

Not only that, but you will have 5GB of data to use in Sri Lanka. Smart Silver lets you receive incoming calls and text messages with the card, too. There's no outgoing support, though.

Like most international prepaid SIM cards, you only have a small duration for use. The Smart Silver has 30 days, and that timer starts ticking once you insert the SIM into your smartphone. After that's used up, this SIM expires and you'll need a new one.

As implied above, activation is really simple, just requiring you to insert it into your phone's SIM tray. You don't have to call up ThreeUK to activate at all!

Smart Silver doesn't have any top-off options -- after that 30 days is up, or your 5GB is used -- whichever comes first -- that's it. You'll need a new one.

Keepgo Global Lifetime

Keepgo is another decent choice, but might be one of the more expensive options. The Global Lifetime SIM card gives you 1GB of data right out of the box. But, after that's used up, you will have to pay for each additional 1GB used.

They do, however, offer fast 4G LTE data. Additionally, your SIM works for one year upon purchase, but that can be extended another year every time you fill up or top-off.

Keepgo, like most prepaid SIM cards, offers no tethering or hotspot use here.

A lot of prepaid SIM cards for traveling to Sri Lanka and other countries usually offer you chunks of data to use. Since this one offers you 1GB at a time, it's definitely one of the more expensive options.

Asia-Pacific Plus

Next up, we're looking at the Asia-Pacific Plus SIM card. They do one thing really unique here -- offering you unlimited data to use while abroad. You actually get 4.5GB of high speed data, and are reduced down to just 128Kbps of unlimited data when that is used up.

This card has a smaller duration on it than most. You actually only get a maximum of 15 days with this card. However, you do have package choices of either 9 or the 15 days of data, but cost varies based on your choice.

It's a tri-cut SIM card, so it will work with most unlocked GSM phones, whether you're sporting a Normal, Mini, or Nano sized SIM card tray.

The Asia-Pacific Plus doesn't offer hotspot or tethering abilities here either. As you might imagine, there's no way to top-up the card, and there are no calling or texting abilities here either.

ThreeUK Pay As You Go

And finally, but certainly not least, ThreeUK also has a sweet Pay As You Go choice for traveling to Sri Lanka.

Right out of the box, you get a whole 12GB data that you can use. There's 3000 voice mins and 3000 texts, too. However, voice and text can only be used to call UK numbers and European numbers, and you have to be in a European country to do so. So, for most of your travels through Asia, this is a data-only SIM.

Activation is easy -- just pop the card in your phone. One of the unique things that ThreeUK does here is gives you the option to top-up when you run low, whereas most require you to pick up a new SIM card entirely.

Verdict

As you can see, there are a lot of great prepaid SIM cards that you can use for your Sri Lanka travels. The Smart Silver is one of our favorites, providing you with 5GB of fast data; however, you cannot go wrong with the Asia-Pacific Plus' unlimited data package either.
