Some of the important factors in choosing the best travel laptop is naturally battery life and overall weight. If these two aspects are covered, you have an exceptional travel laptop in your hands. However, there are several other factors that determine a good traveling laptop. This is why we decided to compile a list of some of the best digital nomad laptops we can find today. The list includes offerings from multiple manufacturers, so be sure to have a closer look.

13 Best Travel and Digital Nomad Laptops of 2019

Lenovo Ideapad 110

When we talk about travel laptops, we usually include smaller laptops with up to 11-13-inches of display on board. However, this offering by Lenovo comes with a 15.6-inch display and is still pretty capable of being used for travel. At just 0.9-inches thick and around 4.85 pounds, it can go into any laptop briefcase without you feeling any of the bulk. While there’s a large display on board, the resolution is capped to 1366 x 768, which is mildly disappointing. So if you’re seeking a laptop that can also double as a media player, well, this is probably not it.

But with that being said, it can handle pretty much any task you throw at it. The Ideapad 110 comes with 4GB of RAM on board, accompanied by a 500GB standard hard drive. Running the laptop is an Intel Pentium 4405U dual-core processor with Intel HD Graphics 510 on board. Surprisingly, the laptop also includes a DVDRW drive accompanied by a USB 3.0 slot, a USB 2.0 slot and a solitary HDMI port for monitor connectivity. As far as the operating system is concerned, this laptop runs Windows 10 out of the box.

While this is certainly not the best laptop, you’ll be hard pressed to do better than this offering especially at this price point. Lenovo doesn’t offer color choices with the Ideapad 110.

Acer Chromebook CB3-131-C3SZ

This neat offering by Acer comes with a smaller 11.6-inch display, which makes it extremely portable regardless of where you’re traveling. However, this also means that the company has made some compromises in the hardware department. To start things off, this laptop comes with the Intel Celeron N2840 dual-core processor, accompanied by 4GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage. While the storage space may seem minimal, it is adequate enough for web browsing, sending emails, or even watching media.

Needless to say, this is a budget offering with some glaring hardware omissions compared to some more expensive offerings. But since each customer is different, we feel travelers will definitely take a liking to this offering primarily for its size. Not to mention the fact that it can last 9 hours on a single charge. Taking all these factors into account, the Acer Chromebook is definitely worth a look. The company offers this laptop in just one color – Clamshell, so there are no color options on offer. As far as the pricing is concerned, you’ll be spending well under $300 for this Chromebook.

Chromebooks are an excellent option for those seeking a lightweight yet functional laptop. Since Chromebooks run entirely on cloud, your reliance on internal storage is minimal. Plus, the fact that you can also add your own media drives via USB makes this a fantastic option overall.

Microsoft Surface Book

Microsoft has innovated greatly in the notebook business, although one would say it was slow to catch up to the Apple iPad. The most recent of the Surface models, known as the Surface Book, is an excellent option for those seeking a lightweight laptop. However, this is not meant for the budget audiences. There are multiple variations of the Surface Book to choose from, so it can get quite confusing to pick the variant you like the most.

However, having so many choices can also be a good thing. For this purpose, we’re going to discuss the variant with 128GB of storage, 8GB of RAM, and Intel’s Core i5 CPU under the hood. In terms of display, you’re getting a crystal clear 13.5-inch PixelSense touchscreen panel with a resolution of 3000 x 2000. The best part with this particular bundle is that it also includes the Surface Pen, allowing you to make edits to existing artwork or create new ones, in addition to controlling certain aspects of the Windows 10 UI.

Despite packing a 13.5-inch display, Microsoft has managed to make this super light at 3.48 lbs, making this one of the lightest tablet-laptop hybrids out there. Bear in mind that Microsoft has already launched the Surface Book 2, but we’re talking about this model because it’s significantly cheaper right now. There aren’t a lot of choices in terms of color, so you’ll have to stick to the Gray version offered on Amazon.

Lenovo Flex 14

This offering by Lenovo strikes the perfect balance by offering portability as well as size with this offering. As the name indicates, this laptop comes with a 14-inch display sporting a resolution of 1366 X 768, which isn’t much to write home about, but still gets the job done on a laptop that’s ideally suited for moving around. With a brightness of 220 nits at its peak, the Lenovo Flex 14 is surely capable of being used in sunlight. The best part about the Lenovo Flex, however, is that it’s also a tablet. Thanks to its 360 degree hinge, it can convert into a tablet within seconds. Naturally, this means the display is also a touchscreen, allowing you to navigate the features of the user interface with your fingertips.

In the audio department, Lenovo has used speakers optimized with Dolby Audio Premium, so you can expect high-end audio performance from the onboard speakers. In terms of processing power, the Flex 14 is packed with a 2.3 GHz Intel Pentium 4415U processor along with Intel HD Graphics 610 integrated GPU. It also has 4GB of RAM and 128GB of SSD storage for super snappy operation. As you would expect, this tablet/laptop hybrid runs Windows 10 on board. The Flex 14 is also compatible with Lenovo Active Pen, although this product is not supplied with the laptop. It also has 2 USB 3.0 ports, so there’s no dearth of connectivity options here.

Acer Swift 3

While we spoke about Acer’s Chromebook above, the company is also known for its Windows 10 laptops. The Swift 3 is one such offering, and offers great portability, which is a priority for travelers. It packs a 14-inch 1920 x 1080 display with in-plane switching or IPS. Running the show is a 1.6 GHz Intel Core i5-8250U processor, which will keep your laptop ticking even through strenuous tasks. There’s also a massive 256GB solid state drive (SSD) here, enabling you to perform tasks quickly and even experience quicker boot times compared to standard laptop hard drives.

Given the size, this can be likened to a Windows version of the popular and one of our favorites, the Apple MacBook Air. In the graphics department, the Swift 3 comes with Intel HD Graphics 620 integrated GPU underneath, so there’s no dedicated graphics card for this offering. It also has 8GB of RAM, so multitasking is expectedly a breeze on the Swift 3. The laptop runs Windows 10 Home out of the box, so you’re getting all the necessary tools you need to get started. Although most variants of the Swift 3 is sold in Black, the company also offers it in Gray, although it depends on the configuration you select. At well under $700, the Swift 3 is definitely a laptop worth considering in this segment.

Dell XPS 13

It’s hard to leave out Dell when we talk about notebooks. That’s the case when we talk about ultra portable notebooks as well. The Dell XPS 13 is an exciting offering with a slender exterior and a powerful internal hardware, making it ideal for travelers. The XPS 13 packs a 13.3-inch 1920 x 1080 16:9 display, offering you the best in terms of picture quality. Dell has managed to cram in a 13.3-inch display on an exterior that could only house a 11-inch display. This speaks volumes about the work that has gone into keeping the size down. It runs a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5-7200U dual-core processor with Intel HD Graphics 620 bundled in.

There’s a 128GB SSD on board here, giving you the ability to quickly boot up your laptop and transfer files in half the time compared to conventional hard drives. There’s 8GB of RAM on board as well, which is the standard among high-end tablets today. There are a variety of connectivity options available here as well, including two USB 3.0 ports as well as a USB C port which can also double as the Thunderbolt port. With a thickness of just 0.6-inches and weighing only 2.7 lbs, the Dell XPS 13 has the rare distinction of being one of the powerful laptops with a slender exterior. The laptop display is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass, so it’s resistant to accidental scratches. The XPS 13 runs Windows 10 Home by default. As of now, there are no color options barring Gray.

Apple MacBook Air (13-inch)

The Apple MacBook Air is perhaps the best laptop on this list and there’s a very simple reason for that. Despite the fact that several manufacturers have tried to mimic the MacBook Air form factor by adding SSD storage and slim aluminum bodies, the MacBook Air is truly the notebook that started it all. It has evolved over the years, of course, but users still get the choice between the 11.6 and the 13.3-inch variants of the MacBook Air. We’re going to talk about the 13.3-inch offering, which is the most preferred model anyway. Well, this model has a display resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels, which is slightly out of the ordinary compared to other notebooks in the market.

It runs a dual-core 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 processor with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD storage, so there’s plenty to get started on here. The GPU here is Intel HD Graphics 6000, which comes integrated with Intel’s processors. The MacBook Air, more importantly, runs macOS by default, so if you also happen to be an iPhone user, the integration here is definitely worth checking out. At 2.96 lbs, the MacBook Air is definitely one of the lightest laptops on the market right now. Expectedly, the MacBook Air is only sold in Silver as Apple didn’t start offering color variants until recently. Compared to most laptops in the market, the MacBook Air fares much better. Keeping this in mind, we strongly recommend you to check out this offering.

Samsung Chromebook 3

The Acer Chromebook we mentioned above was certainly not going to be the last featuring Google’s cloud centric OS. The Samsung Chromebook 3 is a budget laptop which doesn’t offer much in terms of raw hardware, but is still extremely portable, making it appealing to travelers. Sporting a 11.6-inch 1366 x 768 display, the Samsung Chromebook 3 definitely doesn’t have the most pixel dense display. However, it makes up for that with super snappy booting times and of course, its weight. The listing mentions 16GB of internal storage on the laptop, which is certainly not adequate. However, thanks to dedicated USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports, the Chromebook 3 can handle any peripherals you throw at it. There’s 4GB of RAM, however, which is pretty decent.

One of the primary reasons why I like Chromebooks is because of the battery life they offer. This particular offering by Samsung can apparently run unplugged for 11 hours, which is pretty remarkable considering the fact that this is a laptop. Bonus connectivity options like Bluetooth 4.0 are also present on the Chromebook 3. What’s interesting about this laptop is that Samsung has applied a liquid spill resistant coating on the keyboard, keeping you safe from accidental spills.

ASUS ZenBook 13

ASUS has been a highly competitive PC and laptops manufacturer for quite a few years now. Well, the company also has something to offer in the ultra-portable notebooks range. The ZenBook 13 is an incredibly stylish laptop that can immediately impress with its razer thin exterior and glossy aluminum body, keeping the laptop light but also classy. All of this helps keep ASUS the weight down to just 2.6 lbs. In terms of internal hardware, the ZenBook 3 comes with a 13.3-inch anti-glare Full HD IPS display. With a wide view of 170 degrees, the ZenBook 13 is a treat for movies and TV shows.

Further, it runs the 8th generation Intel Core i5-8250U processor clocked at 1.6 GHz. ASUS has included 8GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD storage, which is adequate for any new laptop. As you would expect, the ZenBook 13 runs on Windows 10, so old users will find a familiar interface here.  Moreover, the laptop also as a fingerprint scanner, which works in tandem with Windows Hello, allowing you to authenticate your account quickly. While the company offers the ZenBook 13 in Gold, the notebook in the aforementioned configuration is only available in Silver. If that’s not a dealbreaker for you, we highly recommend you to check it out.

Lenovo Ideapad 730s

Given the amount of notebooks that Lenovo churns out each year, it’s very difficult to keep track of them all. However, some do manage to pop out thanks to their hardware. The Ideapad 730s is something similar, and has managed to impress us thanks to the size. Despite featuring a 13.3-inch display, Lenovo has taken great care to ensure the laptop remains razor thin and thus an ideal companion for your travels. It packs a Full HD IPS display, so you can expect decent amount of detail here. Thanks to Dolby Atom speakers underneath, you also get one of the best possible music experience with a laptop.

The laptop uses the most recent generation of Intel Core i5 processors, and also offers 8GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD storage, offering both speed and efficiency. Speaking of efficiency, the Ideapad 730s can last for a remarkable 10 hours on a single charge. However, this number might go down significantly if you choose to stream videos or keep the brightness at 100%. This is not even the best part really. Much like we see on phones, the Ideapad 730s can give you up to 80% of juice with just an hour of charging. The laptop runs Windows 10 and is available in Iron Gray.

HP Spectre x360-13t

The HP Spectre might not be the most popular laptop out there, but in terms of features as well as design, it’s one of the best out there. The lineup has seen a few changes with time, although the core remains the same – an ultra portable laptop with a more than decent hardware prowess. To start things off, this is a lot more than just a laptop. Thanks to its super flexible hinges, you can also use this as a tablet. Thanks to the large 13.3-inch Full HD IPS display, you get to enjoy a wide range of content in any form you want. HP also offers a stylus that can help you create artwork on the go. This tablet/laptop hybrid runs Windows 10 Home out of the box, giving you access to all the editing tools you can think of.

If we look beyond the stunning exterior of the HP Spectre, well, it’s running the 8th gen Intel Core i7 processor on board. This is accompanied by 512GB of storage (SSD), and a whopping 16GB of RAM. So as far as hardware credentials are concerned, the Spectre is definitely one of the best out there. Its media performance is significantly boosted thanks to the onboard quad speakers by Bang & Olufsen. It’s available in a Dark Ash color, with no other color options to choose from.

Microsoft Surface Pro 4

Microsoft’s Surface lineup has been incredibly successful and we’ll be remiss if we didn’t mention the spectacular Surface Pro 4. While the images floating around there can be slightly misleading, the Surface Pro 4 mentioned here comes only in the tablet format. However, you can just as easily pair a keyboard or mice with the device or pick Microsoft’s own keyboard that attaches to the tablet. In the hardware department, the Surface Pro 4 is equipped with a 12.3-inch PixelSense display which offers great contrast with very little glare, which will keep your eyes from getting strained.

The Surface Pro 4 also comes with a kickstand, allowing you to prop it up on a flat surface. This allows you to instantly switch between laptop and tablet modes respectively. The laptop/tablet hybrid also comes with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, so it’s no less than a high end laptop you might find out there. It runs Intel’s Core M processor under the hood. While Microsoft originally offers the Surface Pro 4 in multiple colors, the listing only has the Silver variant.

HP ENVY 13-AB016NR

The HP Envy is a line of laptops that most tech enthusiasts are familiar with. Given HP’s versatile range of laptops in the market, it’s no surprise that the company features multiple times on our list. Well, the Envy 13 is a thin, light laptop that can make working a breeze, especially if you’re on the go a lot. It packs a 13.3-inch Full HD IPS eDP BrightView display, accompanied by a super sleek keyboard with speakers on either side.

It runs Intel’s 7th gen dual-core Core i5 processor underneath clocked at 2.5 GHz, so you can expect decent speed from this offering. Adding to those attributes is the 8GB of RAM as well as 256GB of SSD storage. Spectacularly, the company mentions that the Envy 13 can last for up to 14 hours on a single charge, easily making this one of the most efficient laptops on our list. There are dedicated USB and HDMI ports on the laptop, allowing you to attach peripherals or connect to a bigger screen. The Envy 13 is currently available in Silver on Amazon.
