How to fix Nokia 8 that turned off by itself and won’t turn back on (easy steps)

Released in October last year, the Nokia 8 is one of Android smartphones that sports pretty impressive specs; Qualcomm MSM8998 Snapdragon 835 chipset, Android 7.1 Nougat operating system (upgradable to Android 8 Oreo) and a big  3090 mAh battery. But just like any other premium smartphones, Nokia 8 is not free of problems which owners encounter from time to time. Among the most common issues are related to power and firmware and in this post, I will address the issue wherein the phone reported turned off by itself refused to turn back on.

This problem can be classified as a power-related issue but it can also be due to some problems with the firmware. In fact, we have encountered this problem with other devices several times already and we know we simply can’t be sure what it really is all about without knowing the reason why it turned off on its own in the first place and why it won’t turn back on. How to fix Nokia 8 that no longer powers up after turning off


More often when the phone turns off on its own, it’s a firmware issue unless the device got dropped on a hard surface or submerged in water for a few minutes. Nokia 8 has the IP54 rating which makes it splash proof and that’s all. It’s not a water-resistance nor waterproofing rating so if you drop the device in a sink full of water, you can almost expect water can enter into it and mess up its circuits. But the point is, if your Nokia 8 hasn’t been dropped or submerged in water and this problem started without apparent reason, then it could be pretty much easy to do. With that said, here’s what I suggest you should do about this…

Press and hold the Volume Up button and the Power key for 10 seconds or until the phone turns on and boots up.

Doing this will force the phone to restart and if the problem is indeed due to a system crash or minor firmware glitch, then this could be the only thing you need to do to bring your phone back to life. This procedure is what we call Forced Restart which simulates battery disconnect; it refreshes your phone’s memory and reloads all services and apps during the boot sequence. It’s very effective in addressing minor firmware and app related issues. If your phone still won’t respond to it, try this…

  1. Press and hold the Volume Up button first and don’t let go.
  2. Press and hold the Power key while holding down the Volume Up button.
  3. Keep both keys held down for 10 seconds or more.

This basically does the same as the first procedure only that we’re making sure that you’re doing the procedure correctly. If you press and hold the Power key first before the Volume Up, the Forced Reset isn’t initiated that’s why you need to hold down the Volume Up button first before triggering the phone to turn on. If it still won’t respond to this, then you can try this one…

  1. Plug the charger to a working AC outlet.
  2. Using the original cable, connect the phone to its charger.
  3. Regardless whether the phone shows the charging symbol or not, leave it connected to its charger for at least 10 minutes.
  4. Press and hold the Volume Up and Power keys for 10 seconds or more to try to turn the phone on but this time while it’s connected to its charger.

After doing all this and the phone remains unresponsive with its black screen, then the problem is more than just a minor system crash or glitch. You should let the technician check it for you so bring it to the service center to be checked.
