What to do with your Samsung Galaxy S9 with Black Screen of Death after the Android 9 Pie update?

Some would say the update is bad but majority of those who updated their devices actually don’t have issues. So, this could be just an isolated problem and we have to address it in this post as we have readers who asked for our help. Here are the things you need to do if your Galaxy S9 is stuck on the black screen of death after being updated to Android 9.0 Pie…

Try doing the forced reboot. Most of the time, the common reason why the phone gets stuck on the black screen is due to a firmware crash. It’s a very minor issue but will leave your phone unresponsive unless you do something to fix it. The thing is, the device won’t respond when you press the power key or connect it to the charger. This leaves users to think that the problem is with the hardware when in fact, it’s only with the software. With that being said, the best thing you can do about it is this:

  • Press and hold the volume down button and the power key at the same time for 10 seconds or more.

This will restart the phone like the normal reboot but its memory will be refreshed and all its apps and services reloaded. If it was indeed due to a system crash, then your phone should already be booting up by now. If it’s still not responding, then try doing this instead:

  1. Press and hold the volume down button.
  2. While holding down the volume down button, press and hold the power key.
  3. Keeps both keys held down together for 10 seconds or more.

As you can see, it’s actually the same as the first procedure only that this time we’re making sure you’re doing the procedure correctly because doing it otherwise won’t give you similar outcome. If your phone is still not responding after this, however, then try the next procedure.

Connect phone to charger and force restart it. Another possibility we need to rule out is that the battery could have been totally drained. While it’s not really an issue, there are times when a simple battery drain would lead to a system crash as some services, apps and hardware components may not be properly shut down when the phone suddenly turns off once the battery is depleted. In this case, you will be dealing with a couple of very minor issues that both result to an unresponsive device. To address this, here’s what you’re going to do:

  1. Plug the charger to a working wall outlet.
  2. Connect your Galaxy S9 to its charger using the original cable.
  3. Regardless whether your phone shows the charging symbol or not, leave it connected to the charger for at least 10 minutes.
  4. Now while the phone is connected to the charger, press and hold the volume down button.
  5. While holding down the volume down button, press and hold the power key.
  6. Keeps both keys held down together for 10 seconds or more.

Based on personal experience, this will fix the problem. But if not, then try the next procedure.

Try rebooting your phone in recovery mode. The recovery mode is the fail-safe for almost all Android devices including your Galaxy S9. Even if the device has a serious firmware issue, it may still be able to run in this mode. So, you should try it because if successful, you may proceed to doing the master reset which will fix this problem. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  2. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  3. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  4. Press Power button to select.
  5. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  6. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  7. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

After doing all these and the phone is still not responding, then it’s time you brought it to the shop so that a technician can check it up for you.
