How To Fix LG V40 ThinQ Crashes When Trying To Install Software Update
Problem: I was updating my LG V40 ThinQ when my internet connection was interrupted. The phone immediately went into a boot loop that will not go past the initial start-up screen. I have done a master reset, but it immediately starts trying to install the system update and gets stuck at 30% and crashes again. I have managed to do a soft reset when I can get it to try the install again, but it doesn’t matter if I tell it to start in safe mode, recovery mode, or do a factory reset…all it does is goes back to trying to install the system update.
Solution: It’s very likely that this issue is caused by the incomplete software update done on the phone when the Internet got disconnected. Listed below are the recommended troubleshooting steps for this particular problem.
Perform a soft reset
This step is usually performed when the phone is unresponsive but should also work in this case as it will refresh the operating system. Press and hold the Power button and Volume Down until the device powers off, approximately 8 seconds, then release.
Check if the issue still occurs.
Remove the microSD card of the phone
If you have a microSD card that has corrupted sectors then it could cause certain issues on the phone including and not limited to the phone turning off on its own. Try removing this card then check if the issue still occurs.
Start the phone in Safe Mode
To check if an app you downloaded is causing the problem you should start the phone in Safe Mode. When the phone operates in this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run.
- Turn off the phone.
- In the options menu that displays, press and hold Power off.
- When prompted to restart in Safe Mode, tap OK.
- After your device restarts, it displays Safe mode at the bottom of the screen.
Try to check if the issue occurs in this mode. If it doesn’t then it could be caused by a downloaded app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
Wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode
Clearing the cache partition of the phone will erase the temporary system data which if corrupted can cause this problem.
- From the Home screen, tap Settings.
- Tap the ‘General’ tab.
- Tap Storage > Internal storage.
- Wait for menu options to finish calculating.
- Tap Free up space.
- Tap Temporary files & raw files.
- Select the following options: Cached data, Clip tray temporary files, Raw files from camera
- Tap Delete > DELETE.
Check if the issue still occurs.
Perform a factory reset
One last troubleshooting step to consider is a factory reset. Take note that this will erase your phone data.
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons.
- When the LG logo appears, quickly release and then re-hold the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume down button.
- When the ‘Delete all user data (including LG and carrier apps) and reset all settings’ message appears, use the Volume down button to highlight Yes.
- Press the Power button to reset the device
Once the reset is complete restart the phone. In case the issue still persists then you will need to bring this device to a service center and have it checked.
