5 Best Games Like Civilization

Sid Meier’s Civilization series is one of the hottest series of games on the market, requiring players to use strategy, diplomacy, and economic advantages to bolster their way to victory. It’s a unique series to get into because there are very few games out on the market that allow the player to use politics to win the game. Civilization lets you do that; however, after match after match, game after game, rounds that seem to take hours to complete, the game can start to bore. That, and for some, it might just be too expensive to get into — between the base game, the extras, and the expansion packs, getting into the latest Civilization game can cost you quite a bit of money.

So whether you’re bored of Civilization, think it’s too expensive, or you don’t find it enjoyable, there are plenty of other, similar games that might be more up your alley. Not sure what the best alternatives are to Civilization? Here are five of our top picks.

Crusader Kings 2

Civilization has its place in the market, but the game was geared toward the majority in order to make the most sales. That said, it’s not too complex, which is what some Civilization die hards might be looking for in game. For that, Crusader Kings 2 will be right up your alley. An excellent 4X game, it’s also one of the most complex titles out there. You won’t be leading your chosen nation to victory in Crusader Kings 2; no, you’ll be taking over Europe through your own political dynasty, and wading your kingdom through the highs and lows that Europe went through in the medieval time period.

You’ll be able to conquest other nations through war, or acquire them through other political means, such as strongarming, marriage, and more.

Age of Empires

Age of Empires has been around for years. The game has seen expansion after expansion, and in recent years, we’ve seen various forms of successors. None has been able to touch the greatness that was the original game, and that’s why Microsoft has brought it back as a remastered edition — Age of Empires: Definitive Edition. You’ll be able to play through the themes of the first game — ancient Mesopotamia, Greece, Egypt, and Rome. The second game brings your forward in history into the renaissance era. And finally, you have the third included, which focuses on exploration of the world and conquest.

Endless Legend

You’ve no doubt heard of Endless Space before — a popular Sci-Fi 4X game that hit the market. The developers are back with another title, Endless Legend. This one takes on a fantasy theme, putting you into an almost Tolkien-like world. There are some unique factions that you can play, eight actually — but only three in the Alpha build. It combines aspects from RTS, RPG, and 4X games; however, one of the highlights might be its beautiful graphics and large landscapes that players will be able to explore and battle on.

Galactic Civilization

Galactic Civilization is up next, taking on a Sci-Fi style to the Civilization game. The game takes place in the year 2225, as man’s domination has “taken to the stars.” Similar to Civilization, you will use unique mechanics like technology, diplomacy, economics, and colonization to take the battle to the stars and conquer space. There are tons of neat maps in this game, technologies you can advance, and the best of all, friends that you can play with. Similar to Civilization, matches can take hours at a time; however, there is a single-player mode as well.

One of the highlights of this game is the Spacecraft Customization. Galactic Civilization has tons of unique and great looking 3D models; however, players are welcome to craft their own spaceships inside the game as well, and then take them to battle in the galaxy.

Europa Univeralis

And coming up in number one spot on our countdown, we have another title from Paradox Interactive: Europa Univeralis. This game is similar to Crusader Kings 2 in the types of politics that are available, but similar to Hearts of Iron in the style that it’s played. gives you control of a nation to guide through the years in order to create a dominant global empire. Europa Universalis will allow you to rule your nation through the centuries — the medieval world through the renaissance — and give you depth and historical accuracy never seen before. Players will be able to use their nation for true exploration, trade, warfare and diplomacy.
