How to troubleshoot Mate 10 Pro that can’t send / receive text messages
Before troubleshooting software errors that might have caused conflict with SMS functions of your Huawei Mate 10 Pro, check and see if your phone has network signal. You may be using your phone in a place that’s no longer reachable by your network towers and so, your phone isn’t getting a good signal. As a result, basic network functions like texting aren’t working. If your phone is getting a stable signal (1 bar, at least) but still cannot send or receive text or SMS messages, then try these subsequent methods to clear out software issues.
First solution: Soft reset/reboot your phone.
If it just occurred that your phone failed to send or receive a text message or SMS, then it may be due to a random glitch either on the messaging app or on the phone software. To clear this out, performing a soft reset or device restart is recommended. Doing so will dump cache and temporary data from the phone system, refresh apps and clears minor software errors. Here’s how to soft reset a Huawei Mate 10 Pro:
- Press the Power button for a few seconds or until the menu options appear.
- Select Power off option and then tap OK. Doing so will shut down your phone.

- If prompted, read and review the warning then tap OK to confirm action.
Reboot your phone after clearing the app’s cache and data, and then retry sending and receiving sample text or SMS messages on your own device. If it still doesn’t work, then continue to troubleshoot.
Third solution: Delete old and unwanted messages from your messaging app.
You won’t be able to send or receive further messages if you’ve already exceeded the message limit. This is likely the problem if you haven’t set your device to automatically delete old messages when it reached a certain number before reaching the maximum number of messages. As resolution, try to delete old and unwanted messages from your messaging app with these steps:
- Open your messaging app.
- Scroll to and long press on the message you want to delete.
- Then tap the three dots on the far right.
- Select More.
- Then tap to select all the messages you want to delete.
To delete a single text message from your Huawei Mate 10 Pro, follow these steps:
- Open your messaging app.
- Then open the conversation in which you want to delete a text message.
- Locate the message and then long press on it until a message box prompts.
- Finally, tap Delete to confirm.
Clear the messaging app and then relaunch to see if it’s already working as intended.
Fourth solution: Update messaging app or phone software.
Installing update for your messaging app can potentially fix the problem if it’s due to some bugs or malware. Updates not only bring in new features but also offer bug fixes to clear the app from bugs and malware. To manually check for pending app updates, particularly for a third-party (downloaded) messaging app, follow these steps:
- Tap Play Store from the Home screen.
- Swipe in from the right corner of the screen then select My apps & games.
- If an update is available for your messaging app, you will see its name on the list. Select your messaging app from the list then tap the Update button next to it.
Wait until the app is finished updating then open your messaging app to test and see if SMS functions are already working.
If you’re using the stock messaging app, then try to check for new software update to download and install on your phone. Software updates may also contain the required fixes for errant stock apps. Here’s how to check for new updates on your Huawei Mate 10 Pro:
- Tap Settings from the Home screen.
- Tap System.
- Scroll to and tap System update.
- Tap the button to Check for Updates. Doing so will prompt your device to check for updates.
