How to troubleshoot Galaxy S9 Plus with Phone app that keeps crashing


The following solutions are necessary to make the Phone app work on your phone perfectly again. You may not have to do all of the procedures so find out which one works for you…

First solution: Reboot your phone

Before doing any complicated troubleshooting procedures, make sure that you take time rebooting your phone first because this problem could also be just a result of a firmware glitch or any glitch for that matter. Glitches can be fixed by a reboot as they’re not really a big deal but a temporary problem. After the reboot, try to open the Phone app and make a call to find out if it still crashes. If it does, then try the forced reboot to refresh your phone’s memory as well as reload all the apps and services.

To do the forced reboot, press both the volume down and power keys at the same time and hold them together for 10 seconds or more. Your phone will reboot like it normally does so once it becomes active, open the app and find out if the problem is fixed. If still not, then move on to the next solution.

Second solution: Run your phone in safe mode

The Phone app will still work even if your phone is in safe mode. You need to do this to find out if the problem is caused by a third-party application because if it is then it’s pretty easy to fix. In safe mode, all third-party apps are disabled so if the problem doesn’t occur, it follows that the issue is caused by one or some of the apps you installed on your device.

If such is the case, then all you have to do is find out which app is the culprit and uninstall it. It’s a bit of a challenge to know it but start your search from apps you installed about the same time the problem started.

Here’s how to run your phone in safe mode…

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
  3. When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume downkey.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.

And this is how to uninstall an app from your phone…

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > Apps.
  3. Tap the desired application in the default list.
  4. To display preinstalled apps, tap Menu > Show system apps.
  5. Tap UNINSTALL > OK.

However, if the Phone app still crashes even in safe mode, then you have to troubleshoot the firmware.

Third solution: Wipe cache partition

Another possibility we have to rule out is that this problem might have been due to some corrupt system caches. While they’re just some small files, when corrupted, they can actually cause so much trouble to your phone. For the sake of being thorough in our troubleshooting and for the chance to fix this problem, try to follow these steps to delete all system caches. Don’t worry as none of your files and data will be deleted if you did this:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Android logo displays, release all three keys.
  4. An ‘Installing system update’ message will show for 30 – 60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu options appear.
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  6. Press Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

If the app still crashes after this, then you have no other choice but to reset your device.

Fourth solution: Backup important files and perform Master Reset

A master reset is necessary if the problem continues after doing the first three solutions. A reset is always effective when it comes to app-related issues. It will bring the phone back to its factory settings as well as delete all your files and data that are stored in the phone’s internal storage so make sure to make a backup as you may not be able to recover them after the reset.

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  7. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  8. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.
