How to fix OnePlus 6 won’t charge issue

How to fix OnePlus 6 won’t charge issue

Diagnosing a charging problem can be tricky as there’s a number of variables to consider. Below are the troubleshooting steps that you must do to know what causes your OnePlus 6 to stop charging.

Forced reboot

Some cases of charging issues are caused by temporary bugs that develop when a device runs for a long time. To see if that’s the case, we suggest that you simulate the effects of a battery pull. On older devices with removable battery packs, an issue like this can be fixed easily by removing the battery. This is not possible for a OnePlus 6 though so you can only try simulate the effects of physically disconnecting the battery. Before you perform a forced reboot, be sure to leave the phone charging for at least 30 minutes. Afterwards, follow the steps below on how to force reboot the device:

  1. Press and hold down the Power button on the right side of the phone
  2. Hold the Power button down for 10-12 seconds, or until the phone vibrates and restarts
  3. If the phone turns off let go then press power again for 1-2 seconds to restart the phone

If your OnePlus 6 is still unresponsive after doing the steps above, continue holding down the power button for another 10 more seconds. Hopefully, this will force it to reboot. If not, proceed to the next troubleshooting step.

Use another charging accessories

Because it lacks sophistication and looks simple, many Android users often ignore the fact that a charging cable can go bad, especially if there’s no visible damage. The thing is, even a good-looking USB cable can actually be damaged from the inside. There are hundreds of tiny wires inside the make up a typical charging cable. Sometimes, enough of these tiny wires are broken to cause erratic charging. In worse cases, charging will even become impossible. The same can happen on the the adapter that comes with the official cable. For troubleshooting purposes, you want to try using another set of charging cable and adapter. If you can’t readily borrow an official set of cable and adapter, try to visit your local retail store and charge your device using proper accessories.

Use another outlet

If you’ve been charging in the same wall outlet since the problem started, there’s a chance that the issue may not be on your device but with the outlet. Try to use another one when charging to see if that will make a difference.

Check the charging port

Another reason why some devices may stop charging out of the blue is due to a dirty or damaged charging port. If there’s obvious damage to the port prior to noticing the problem, the best step that you can do is to skip the rest of the suggestions and bring the device directly to a Service Center.

If there’s no visible damage to the port, we suggest that you use a magnifying tool to check it. There may be dirt or lint inside that blocks the charging cable. You must do this especially if you constantly expose the device harsh or dusty environment. If you think that the port is dirty or has presence of outside particles, you must clean it with a can of compressed air. Do not insert anything to the port to avoid damaging the system.

Check for screen issue

Sometimes, users may mistake a Bad Screen issue as No Charge issue or No Power issue. This often occurs after accidental drop scenarios. If your OnePlus 6 screen stays black but appears to be working still as it continues to make sound notifications, or other signs of life (vibrates, showing LED light, rings when you call your number), the problem is most likely screen related. Try to reboot the device normally and see if that will fix the screen. Otherwise, you need to send it in for repair.

Charge using a computer

Some users in the past were able to fix charging problems by connecting their device to a PC while charging. At times, charging a device with a computer can clear a system bug that prevents regular charging using official accessories from working.  When doing this troubleshooting step, make sure that your computer is powered on and has the necessary drivers.

Restart to safe mode

Safe Mode is a separate software environment that is usually useful for technicians. It’s use lies in the fact that it suspends third party or downloaded apps from running. Technicians use this mode to check if they suspect that one of the downloaded apps is causing a problem in the system. If your phone turns on when restarted to safe mode, you can bet one of the apps is to blame.

To boot your OnePlus 6 to safe mode:

  1. Press and hold the power button in your OnePlus 6.
  2. Long Press power off button in your phone. You can see this message on the screen: Reboot to safe mode.
  3. Tap OK to enter OnePlus 6 into safe mode.
  4. Wait for your device to restart. After that you can see safe mode symbol at bottom left corner side of the screen

If you can successfully restart the phone to safe mode, that means that one of the apps is to blame. To identify which of your apps is causing the trouble, you should boot the phone back to safe mode and follow these steps:

  1. Boot to safe mode.
  2. Check for the problem.
  3. Once you’ve confirmed that a third party app is to blame, you can start uninstalling apps individually. We suggest that you begin with the most recent ones you added.
  4. After you uninstall an app, restart the phone to normal mode and check for the problem.
  5. If your OnePlus 6 is still problematic, repeat steps 1-4.

Try a portable charger [powerbank]

Aside from charging using a computer, you can also check how the device works when charged via a powerbank. If you have a powerbank, make sure to let the device charge for a couple hours.

Return software settings to defaults

If you are lucky and the cause of the problem is due to an unknown software bug, factory reset may help. Follow the steps below to refresh the system and set it up as a new device.

  1. Turn off the device. This is important. If you can’t turn it off, you’ll never be able to boot to Recovery Mode. If you are not able to shut the device off regularly via the Power button, wait until the phone’s battery is drained. Then, charge the phone for 30 minutes before booting to Recovery Mode.
  2. Reboot to recovery mode by pressing and holding (at the same time) the Volume Down and the Power buttons.
  3. When you see the OnePlus icon displayed on your phone, release all keys.
  4. Enter your PIN code if it’s asked.
  5. In recovery, use Volume Up and Down rocker keys in order to scroll within options and use the Power button to select your option.
  6. Select ‘wipe data factory reset’ and wait while the wipe is performed.
  7. Optional: choose ‘wipe cache partition’ followed by ‘wipe dalvik cache’.
  8. Return to main menu of recovery when done and choose ‘reboot system now’.

Send your phone in

Should none of the troubleshooting steps above work, consider using your device’s warranty to have it repaired. It’s important to let a OnePlus Service Center do the job for you to ensure a guaranteed fix. As an end user, there’s only so much that you can do in this situation. If nothing changes after a factory reset, the most likely reason is hardware malfunction so it’s a good idea to let experts do the job for you.
