How To Fix LG V40 ThinQ Battery Draining Fast

Problem: Battery draining on LG V40 ThinQ more quickly for the past couple of weeks. Used to get 15-18 hours of battery life with power saving mode, now only get average of 9 hours without and 11 hours with power saving. The three top battery draining applications are screen 32% (didn’t use to use this much, the screen only comes on when used), Android System 19% (seems to be using much more than prior), Android OS 10%, Device Idle 6%, and then an app I was actually using for a bit Google Maps at 4%. Seems like there must be some background process not working. I’ve tried everything on that battery draining post for this phone after oreo update, except for factory resetting the phone. There any other solution, or way to identify the problem? Thanks.

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on the phone it’s best to make sure that it is running on the latest software version first. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first. You should also make sure that the apps installed in your phone are the latest versions. You can check if an app update is available by going to the My Apps section of the Google Play Store.

If this issue occurred right after you installed a new software update then it is most likely caused by some old software data that has not been completely removed during the software update. Below are the recommended troubleshooting steps for this issue.

Start the LG V40 ThinQ in Safe Mode

There are instances when  app you downloaded can cause this particular problem as it is not properly optimized yet to run on the phone’s current software version. This usually happens when the said app uses a lot of processing power. To check if this is what’s happening right now try to start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • With the screen on, press and hold the Power key.
  • In the options menu that displays, press and hold Power off.
  • When prompted to restart in Safe Mode, tap OK.
  • After your device restarts, it displays Safe mode at the bottom of the screen.

If the issue does not occur in this mode then you should find out what app is causing the problem and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the LG V40 ThinQ

When the phone accumulates a lot of temporary system data this can usually lead to the data being corrupt. This then leads to issues with the way the phone works which is why it is a good idea to wipe the cache partition of the phone.

  • From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  • Tap the ‘General’ tab.
  • Tap Storage > Internal storage.
  • Wait for menu options to finish calculating.
  • Tap Free up space.
  • Tap Temporary files & raw files.
  • Select the following options: Cached data, Clip tray temporary files, Raw files from camera
  • Tap Delete – DELETE.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Factory reset the LG V40 ThinQ

One last troubleshooting step to consider is a factory reset. This will revert the phone back to its original factory condition. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing this procedure.

  • Backup data on the internal memory.
  • From the Home screen, Settings.
  • Tap the ‘General’ tab.
  • Tap Restart & reset.
  • Tap Factory data reset.
  • If desired, tap the Erase SD card checkbox.
  • Tap RESET PHONE > Delete all > RESET.

You can also reset the phone using the hardware keys.

  • Backup all data on the internal memory.
  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons.
  • When the LG logo appears, quickly release and then re-hold the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume down button.
  • When the ‘Delete all user data (including LG and carrier apps) and reset all settings’ message appears, use the Volume down button to highlight Yes.
  • Press the Power button to reset the device

Once the reset is complete do not install any apps in your phone yet. Instead, try to check first if the issue persists.

In case the above steps fails to fix the problem then you should bring the phone to a service center and have it checked as this could already be caused by a faulty hardware component considering the fact that the phone gets hot. There’s a possibility that the battery might have to be replaced.
