In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the LG V40 ThinQ keeps getting same software update issue.

How To Fix LG V40 Keeps Getting Same Software Update

Problem: So… I’ve had my LG V40 ThinQ since it was released . Never had any problems with updating the software but since the December patch was ready to be updated that I can’t really do so. I click install now and it starts downloading and installing and everything’s fine. Then it finishes and says it installed successfully. But then minutes after I receive the same update message again, for the same patch. And I can’t seem to fix this. I haven’t tried to factory reset my phone yet, tho. Just because I don’t wanna risk losing any files or things I have in my phone that may not be backup saved. Is there something else I can do to fix this?

Solution: It’s very likely that this issue is caused by a software glitch which makes the phone think that it still does not have the latest software update. Listed below are the recommended troubleshooting steps for this particular problem.

Wipe the cache partition

Your phone will store temporary data in a dedicated partition in its storage space which helps the device run apps smoothly. If this data gets corrupted then issues can occur on the device. To make sure that this is not what’s causing the problem you will have to clear the cache partition of the phone.

  • From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  • Tap the ‘General’ tab.
  • Tap Storage > Internal storage.
  • Wait for menu options to finish calculating.
  • Tap Free up space.
  • Tap Temporary files & raw files.
  • Select the following options: Cached data, Clip tray temporary files, Raw files from camera
  • Tap Delete > DELETE.

Once this is done manually check if the update is available. If it is then I suggest that you install the update using your computer.

Update the phone using the LG Software Update Assistant

  • Make sure that the Software Upgrade Assistant (SUA) is already installed on your computer. You can download this from the LG website.
  • From the desktop, click the VZW Software Upgrade Assistant icon
  • Make sure that the LG V40 ThinQ is powered on then connect it to the computer via USB cable, choose File Transfer as the USB mode then click NEXT.
  • As soon as the device is recognized (may take a few minutes), click NEXT.
  • The system checks for updates and prompts you to click START UPDATE if one is available.Downloading the update can take from 30-60 minutes and installing the update can take an additional 30-60 minutes.
  • After the update has completed, click FINISH.

Perform a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step you can perform if the above steps fails to fix the problem is a factory reset. Take note that since this will erase your phone data you should backup your phone data before proceeding.

  • Back up data on the internal memory before performing a factory reset.
  • From the Home screen, Settings.
  • Tap the ‘General’ tab.
  • Tap Restart & reset.
  • Tap Factory data reset.
  • If desired, tap the Erase SD card checkbox.
  • Tap RESET PHONE – Delete all – RESET

You can also perform the factory reset using the hardware keys.

  • Backup all data on the internal memory before performing a master reset.
  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons.
  • When the LG logo appears, quickly release and then re-hold the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume down button.
  • When the ‘Delete all user data (including LG and carrier apps) and reset all settings’ message appears, use the Volume down button to highlight Yes.
  • Press the Power button to reset the device

After the reset the issue should be resolved.
