How To Fix LG G7 ThinQ Text Message Notification Not Working

Problem: I have a LG G7 ThinQ and all my notification sound works on my phone except for my messages. I tried fixing it myself, thinking it was an easy fix, by going into my apps/notifications settings and clicking the messaging app. However, when I get there all the options to turn my sound notifications on are the color grey and won’t let me click on them; blocked from me in a way. I’ve went threw my settings directly from the message app and all is okay on that side. It makes no sound or vibration, but will show my visually when I get a new text. Please help me… Thank you.

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on this device it’s best to make sure that it is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

The first thing that you will need to do in this case is to make sure that the text message notification setting of the phone is set properly.

  • From a Home screen, tap Messaging.
  • If prompted to change the default SMS app, tap NEXT > YES to confirm.
  • Tap the Menu icon Menu icon (upper-right).
  • Tap Settings.
  • Tap Notifications.
  • Tap New message to turn on
  • When on, tap Notification sound.
  • Select a sound then tap OK.

Check if the issue is now resolved.

Check if the problem occurs in Safe Mode

There’s a possibility that an app you have downloaded is causing this problem. If you have downloaded an app before experiencing this problem then that app could be the culprit. To check if the problem is caused by an app you will have to start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Make sure the device is powered off.
  • Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button until the System recovery screen displays then release both buttons.
  • Select Safe mode. Use the Volume buttons to highlight the option and the Power button to select.
  • The device starts up with ‘Safe mode’ displayed in the lower-left.

Try to check if you are getting text notifications in this mode. If the issue does not occur then it is most likely caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

Sometimes the phone’s cached data can get corrupted and when this happens certain issues can occur on the device. To eliminate this possibility you will have to wipe the cache partition of the phone.

  • From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  • Tap the ‘General’ tab.
  • Tap Storage > Internal storage.
  • Wait for menu options to finish calculating.
  • Tap Free up space.
  • Tap Temporary files & raw files.
  • Select the following options: Cached data, Clip tray temporary files, Raw files from camera
  • Tap Delete > DELETE.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Perform a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step to consider is a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before performing this step as it will be deleted in the process.

Factory reset from the settings menu

  • From the Home screen go to Settings.
  • Tap the ‘General’ tab.
  • Tap Restart & reset.
  • Tap Factory data reset.
  • If desired, tap the Erase SD card checkbox.
  • Tap RESET PHONE > Delete all > RESET

Factory reset using the hardware keys

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons.
  • When the LG logo appears, quickly release and then re-hold the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume down button.
  • When the ‘Delete all user data (including LG and carrier apps) and reset all settings’ message appears, use the Volume down button to highlight Yes.
  • Press the Power button to reset the device.

Once the reset is complete the issue should now be fixed.
