Problem: LG G7 ThinQ won’t charge
Bought it on Nov of 2018 new no warranty off eBay. The problem started on Monday. It recognizes that it’s plugged in but it’s not charging, Then I took the battery out and put it back worked like nothing was wrong. Today the same problem came back again.. I have googled and tried many things but sometimes it is charging very slow and gets to 5% and stops. Sometimes the white circle is just rotating like is searching for something and then it goes back an says charge before turning on. I don’t have any other LG cable or battery. Runs the latest android version.
Solution: For an issue like this, the same set of troubleshooting steps that we’ve always shared must be followed. There’s a 50-50 chance that the problem can be caused by a hardware fault so if the following troubleshooting steps below won’t help, you should consider getting help from a professional.
The LG G7 ThinQ is originally designed to have non-removable battery pack. Instead of exerting effort in removing the battery, which may accidentally lead to problems if not done properly, you can try to simulate its effects. To do that, follow these steps:
Press and hold the Power button (upper-right edge) and the Volume Down button (left edge) for approximately 5 seconds or until the device power cycles.
As much as possible, try to avoid disconnecting the battery in this device to lessen the chances of making a mistake and causing permanent hardware damage.
Use another set of charging accessories
When troubleshooting any charging issue for whatever device, it’s important to check if the charging cable and adapter are working fine. If you can’t readily find another set of accessories, be creative with it. If you know someone with the same phone, try to use their cable and adapter. If you are in range of a local retail store where you can use an official and known working cable and adapter, go there and charge your phone using them. This is an important troubleshooting step that you must do at this stage. You’ll hate to waste your time and effort doing other troubleshooting steps when the problem lies on the cable or adapter in the first place. Charging cables and adapter may lack moving parts but they can still become damaged internally. Even if there are no visible damage outside, the tiny wires inside the cable can break without you knowing it. That in turn can lead to charging problems.
Check the charging port
This troubleshooting step is superficial and very limited. Still, you want to do it to see if there are obvious marks of physical damage that might cause charging problems. A dirt in the charging port or some foreign objects inside may block the cable during charging. This can possibly lead to problems you now have. Your aim here is really simple — take a look. There’s no way for you to know exactly if the charging port system is in perfect working condition because that’s the job of a tech. The most that you can do at this time is to clean the port using a can of compressed air.
Charging problems can sometimes also be caused by a software bug. For instance, charging can become erratic sometimes if the device has run for a long time without stopping. This can cause Android to lose track of true battery levels, which may then lead to premature shutdowns. In other cases, it can also cause the phone to charge improperly. To check if your device has trouble detecting battery levels, we suggest that you calibrate it at this time. Here’s how:
- Drain the battery completely. This means using your device until it powers down by its own and the battery level reads 0%.
- Charge the phone until it reaches 100%. Be sure to use original charging equipment for your device and let it charge up completely. Do not unplug your device for at least two more hours and also don’t use it while charging.
- After the elapsed time, unplug your device.
- Restart the device.
- Use your phone until it completely runs out of power again.
- Repeat steps 1-5.
Check for bad apps
One of the reasons for a lot of charging problems in the past is bad apps. Some poorly coded apps may interfere with Android and cause problems. To check if that’s the reason why your LG G7 ThinQ does not charge properly, try to restart your phone to safe mode. Once there, charge the phone and see if there’s a difference. Here’s how to boot your device to safe mode:
- With the screen on, press and hold the Power key.
- In the options menu that displays, press and hold Power off.
- When prompted to restart in Safe Mode, tap OK.
- After your device restarts, it displays Safe mode at the bottom of the screen.
- Charge the phone.
If your device charges normally for a few times on safe mode, that means an app is to blame. To identify which of your apps is causing the trouble, you should boot the phone back to safe mode and follow these steps:
- Boot to safe mode.
- Check for the problem.
- Once you’ve confirmed that a third party app is to blame, you can start uninstalling apps individually. We suggest that you begin with the most recent ones you added.
- After you uninstall an app, restart the phone to normal mode and check for the problem.
- If your LG G7 ThinQ is still problematic, repeat steps 1-4.
A drastic way to check if there’s a software bug that mistakenly triggers the system is factory reset. Make sure to back your personal data first before you wipe the phone and return its settings to their defaults.
To factory reset your LG G7 ThinQ:
- Create a backup of your files.
- From the Home screen, tap Settings.
- Tap the ‘General’ tab.
- Tap Restart & reset.
- Tap Factory data reset.
- If desired, tap the Erase SD card checkbox.
- Tap RESET PHONE.
- Tap Delete all.
- Tap RESET
