Charging problem is transpiring among the widespread issues encountered by smartphones owners ever since the birth of the first Android platform. And this continues to affect different devices up to the present. Many cases of charging problems are tied to software issues particularly due to errant apps, misconfigured settings, malware, and bad updates.
Worst cases of charging problems are attributed to hardware damage like defective chargers, damaged charging ports, and even bad battery on the phone. How to troubleshoot Xperia XZ Premium that’s charging very slowly?
Before performing any workaround, check your charging equipment. The real problem may not be on the phone but rather on the charger in use. That said, make sure you are using the original charger for your Xperia XZ Premium smartphone. Non-Sony chargers may not be able to render the same amount of power input your phone needs to charge on time. Also charge your phone from the right source, preferably through a wall outlet. The power output from portable power banks or USB ports including from computers is way lesser than that from wall sockets or direct power sources, thus it takes longer for your device to get fully charged. If your phone is still charging very slow even with all the aforementioned requisites met, then at this point, you can start ruling out software problems with these troubleshooting methods.
First solution: End all background apps then restart.
Background apps are essential to multitasks between apps. But keeping apps running in the background for long likewise increases the chance of these apps to crash or go rogue. When this happens, other phone functions including its charging routine will be affected. That said it’s also imperative to clear background apps from time to time. If you haven’t done so yet, then follow these steps to end all background apps on your Xperia XZ Premium smartphone:
- Press the Recent apps button (square figure) from the home screen.
- Select the Active apps icon.
- Select End next to the required application.
- Or you can simply tap the End All button to clear all running apps at once then tap OK to confirm.
Perform a soft reset or reboot your phone after clearing all background apps to dump cache from the internal memory and refresh the operating system of your device. For starters, here’s how a soft reset is done on your Sony Xperia XZ Premium smartphone:
- Press and hold the Power button for a few seconds.
- Release the button when the menu options appear.
- Tap Power off and then tap OK. Your phone will then shut down.
- After 30 seconds, press and hold the Power button again until the phone reboots.
A soft reset can help clear out random errors that may have afflicted the phone’s charging system.
Second solution: Check and manage battery usage on your phone.
Your phone wouldn’t be able to complete charging on time if something is rapidly draining power on the phone. This is usually the case when any of your apps goes rogue and drains the battery so quickly. To clear this out, view and check battery consumption and see if any of your apps is consuming much power that it should. Here’s how:
- Go to Settings.
- Tap Apps & notifications.
- Select App info.
- Navigate to the Battery section then select an app to view its battery consumption.
If you see any apps showing an unusual amount of power consumption, then you need to manage that app. Your device may not be able to charge faster because some apps are rapidly draining power while it’s charging. Among the things you can do to manage rogue apps would include a force stop, update, or uninstall app.
Third solution: Boot in safe mode and diagnose apps.
Enabling safe mode automatically bypassed third-party apps, which means only the stock apps or pre-installed services are allowed to run. This is an ideal mode to determine if the problem is inflicted by third-party apps or not. Here’s how to enable safe mode on your Xperia XZ Premium smartphone:
- Press and hold down the Power button while the phone is powered on.
- Touch and hold the Power off option until the phone starts to power off.
- After a few seconds, your phone should start in Safe Mode.
Now, try to charge your phone while it’s running in safe mode and see if its charging speed has improved. If it’s charging faster while in safe mode, then you will need to remove some bad apps. It’s probably the one you’ve downloaded and installed before the problem started. If necessary, try to disable or uninstall individual apps starting from your most recent download. If your phone is still charging very slow while in safe mode, then it likely requires service or software repair.
Fourth solution: Update apps and phone software to the latest version available.
Keeping apps and device software up-to-date is highly recommended to keep them optimized. Updates also offer fix patches to random bug-inflicted issues. This can be a potential solution if the charging problem you’re dealing with is attributed to random bugs and malware. If your phone has at least 50 percent battery, is connected to the Internet (Wi-Fi) and has more storage space, then you can go ahead and install available apps or system updates.
To update apps manually on your Xperia XZ Premium device, just refer to these steps:
- Tap to open the Apps screen.
- Scroll to the right then tap Play Store.
- Tap the Menu icon (three vertical lines) on the upper-left side of Google Play.
- Go to My apps & games.
- Select the Updates tab to view the list of apps with pending updates.
- To update individual apps, tap the Update button next to the name of the app.
- To update all apps at once, tap the Update All button on the upper-right of the screen.
To manually check for over-the-air (OTA) updates on your Xperia XZ Premium, follow these steps:
- Go to Settings.
- Select System.
- Tap on Software update.
- If a system update is available, tap CONTINUE then tap INSTALL NOW to start installing the update file.
Reboot your phone after updating apps or installing a system update to apply the new changes and to prevent apps from misbehaving.
Fifth solution: Perform a factory reset/master reset.
This can be deemed among the last options to try if all else failed to fix the problem. Note that all saved contents will be deleted in the process. That said, back up all your important data from the phone’s internal memory to an external storage media like SD cards so you can recover them later. Once you’re all set, follow these steps to perform a factory data reset on your Xperia XZ Premium through settings:
- Navigate to Settings.
- Tap System.
- Scroll to and tap Reset.
- Select Factory data reset.
- Then tap Reset phone to continue.
- If prompted, enter your screen unlock pattern, password, or PIN.
- Then tap Erase everything to confirm reset.
After the reset, your phone should restart and loads the default or factory settings. This means you’ll need to set it up as new.
If your Xperia XZ Premium smartphone is still charging very slow or won’t get fully charge on time after exhausting all prior methods, then your phone needs service. It may have obtained some sort of physical or liquid damage and slow charging happens to be the emerging symptom. For further hardware assessments and/or repair, take your phone to the nearest Sony mobile service center in your place. For further assistance and other recommendations, you can always contact your device carrier or Sony Support. This is a must-do if the slow charging problem started after installing a new system update and it persisted.
