Galaxy S6 wifi keeps disconnecting, connection slows down after logging in, other issues

Problem 1: Galaxy S6 wifi keeps disconnecting

Hi. I bought my Galaxy S6 2 years ago through AT&T and love everything about it. Two weeks ago it started having a patchy wifi connectivity problem. I’ve checked our wifi connection & it’s working fine with my tablet & laptop. I’ve also had a new battery installed a couple of months ago. Today I did a number of system diagnostics & none fixed the problem. I finally did a factory reset and still no luck; it still does the exact same thing: connecting for a brief time, then dropping the connection on its own. So i have to keeping disabling/re-enabling wifi every few seconds/minutes to get connected again. I’ve looked at the S8 and don’t like it at all. I’d rather try & fix the wifi if possible, but I don’t know what’s causing it & a repair shop I called didn’t sound that knowledgeable about fixes other than the ones I’ve already done. I’d appreciate your thoughts & advice. Thanks in advance. — Nooshi

Solution: Hi Nooshi. Wifi troubleshooting for Android is limited to software only. If a factory reset won’t fix whatever trouble you have with this function, there must be a hardware issue causing it to malfunction. At times, wifi works erratically due to a coding issue with the operating system.  This usually happens if the networking chip firmware has become outdated, or needs an update. To fix an issue due to such situation, you must install the latest system update. Some Android updates also contain updates for some hardware that require adjustments to their own firmware like the networking chip. This is especially true for your phone modem firmware (baseband). For wifi functionality to work properly, one must only ensure that the operating system is up-to-date.

If your phone is already running the latest available Android software, then there must be a hardware fault causing the glitch. In that case, you need to contact Samsung so they can check the hardware. There’s no better service center to handle the situation than them. We doubt any third party service center can diagnose the issue at all. The most that they can do is to tell you to replace the motherboard if they can’t fix the wifi issue at all.

Problem 2: Galaxy S6 silent/vibrate notification not working properly

My Nougat S6 will not maintain silent or vibrate status. I can use the shade to put it to silence, or the volume control buttons. I have also tried all manner of Play Store apps, widgets, and toggles. The symptom is always the same. The first incoming call remains silent, but it deactivates the silent mode. After that, all notifications and ringers are on full volume. The same thing occurs if it’s on vibrate only. One incoming call, and after that no silence.

Also, if I use the phone to place a call, the same thing happens disengaging silent mode. I have resorted to powering the phone off when I require silent mode. Any ideas? — Patmontgomery

Solution: Hi Patmontgomery. The first troubleshooting step that we want you to try is a cache partition wipe. This will ensure that Android uses a fresh set of system cache when loading apps. Sometimes, a corrupted or outdated system cache can lead to problems so it’s good if you can take this possible hurdle right away. To clear the system cache, follow these steps:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
  3. When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  4. When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  5. Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Press the Power key to select.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Verify if a third party app is to blame

There may be a third party app that causes the operating system to mishandle incoming notifications so the next good thing to do is restart the phone to safe mode. We don’t know the full history of your device but usually, problems such as yours occur due to a bad app. To boot to safe mode, kindly do these steps:

  1. Press and hold the Volume Down and Power keys for 20 to 30 seconds.
  2. Once you see the Samsung logo, release the Power key immediately but continue pressing the Volume Down key.
  3. Your phone should continue booting up and you will be prompted to unlock your phone as usual.
  4. You will know if the phone successfully booted in safe mode if the text “Safe mode” is displayed at the lower-left corner of the screen.

Remember, you won’t be able to fix the problem with safe mode. What it does is prevent third party apps from running. So, if your phone works normally and vibrate/silence notification schemes are fine, our suspicion that a third party app is to blame must be right. To know which app is causing the trouble, you must use the method of elimination. Uninstall, observe, uninstall. Repeat the cycle until you’ve pinpointed the cause.

Uninstall specific apps

Apps designed to allow audio customizations can sometimes be problematic as well. If you tend to install apps without checking if they work fine in a particular device, you should seriously reconsider it next time. Not only is installing bad apps a source of bugs but they can steal or compromise your device as well. Be sure that you only add apps from reputable developers.

Install Android and app updates

Some known bugs are fixed by installing updates alone. Make sure that you don’t skip updates for both Android and apps when they become available. Your S6 is set to download and install updates by default. If you changed it before, be sure to do it manually check for updates regularly.

Wipe the phone with factory reset

Finally, consider restoring all software settings back to their defaults should nothing work. This is the most that you can do under the circumstances. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
  3. When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
  4. Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  6. Press the Vol Down button again until the option Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
  7. After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.

Problem 3: Galaxy S6 fail to get signal when not in within network range

I love my Galaxy S6 and have no need or desire to get a newer phone. However, in the last few months I find that whenever I leave my home region, the phone fails to remain connected. Once home again, I get 4G and a few bars. But pretty much everywhere else I go I lose the 4G down to no G, and while I still see some bars I cannot make calls, search the web or even text. Once home, the phone eventually, although not always immediately recovers and I am back to 4G and some bars. When camping last weekend, 15 people, including my wife, all had connectivity. I had no service whatsoever. Otherwise, the phone works perfectly, runs what apps I need, and has given years of positive function. But any time I travel it’s a major issue. It will not even roam. T-Mobile. Any ideas? — Scott

Solution: Hi Scott. Your carrier’s signals can’t be anywhere so your phone will obviously lose signal reception when it’s out of network range.

If both you and your wife’s phones are using T-Mobile and her’s receive signal where yours does not, it must be a phone issue. You must perform some troubleshooting to identify the problem. Make sure to follow our troubleshooting steps given to Patmontgomery above. If the problem continues after doing all of them, there must be a hardware problem with your device. It can be a bad antenna or something deeper in the motherboard. Either case, you’ll need to have a professional run a thorough hardware diagnostics to fix the issue.

Problem 4: Galaxy S6 wifi connection slows down after logging in

Hello. I recently acquired a Samsung Galaxy S6 (T-Mobile version) and when I turn on the Wi-Fi the connection is at 54-38mbps. However, after I press the home or back button to leave the Wi-Fi connection page, it instantly drops down to 1 or 2 mbps. The only way I can temporarily solve this is by holding down the home button and then navigating to a new window. Even then, the connection is fast for about 2-5 minutes, and then it becomes slower and slower. If this is a physical antenna problem why would it work for the first few seconds/minutes, and if it really is a physical problem, can you please explain how to take apart the phone to be fixed? (After looking through a lot of your articles I know you don’t do DIYs but in my case I sorely need it…) Note: I don’t have a SIM card in it, but I don’t think that is the main issue, so I never got to know if it could make phone calls or not, I just can’t connect to my home Wi-Fi which works perfectly on all my other computers/mobile devices. Solution: Hi Ben. If by wifi connection page you mean the screen that shows up when you tap wifi network you’re currently connected to (which show 4 things — wifi name, signal strength, security, and IP address), then you’re not really getting an accurate impression of the true wifi speed of said network. The mbps value in Signal strength (in wifi connection page) is the maximum value that the router can provide and not the current internet connection speed. In order to know the real internet connection speed of the wifi network, you can install the Speedtest app from Google Play Store.

If you think your phone has a bad wifi antenna and you want to replace it yourself, look for other websites that can give a good step-by-step instruction. Again, we don’t provide hardware troubleshooting and diagnostics so do more research if you think you can do the repair yourself.
