How to transfer photos from phone to computer

Transferring photos from an Android device regardless whether it’s a phone or a tablet can be done using both wireless and wired methods. Basically, it would be just a copy-paste method like you often do on your computer.

In this article, I will walk you through in moving or copying your pictures from the phone to a computer. So, if you own an Android device and are a bit confused on how to copy, move or backup your photos to a computer, read on as this guide may be able to help you one way or another.

Transfer photos from phone to computer using Google Photos (wireless)

Google Photos or just Photos is a pre-installed application that comes with every Android device. It’s a photo-sharing and storage app developed by Google itself. Needless to say that if you’ve properly set up your Google account in your phone, you are most likely being automatically logged into this app as it’s connected through your account. This app also manages your photos and videos and thus, you can use it to backup your photos and videos. You can also use it to copy them over to your computer. Here’s how it’s done…

  1. Open Google Photos on your Android.
  2. Touch the Menu icon at the upper-left corner of the screen (three lines stacked vertically).
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Now touch Back up & Sync.
  5. Make sure the switch is set to “On”.
  6. Logon to Google Photos (https://photos.google.com/) website using a web browser in your computer where you wish to save your photos.
  7. Log in using the Google account that’s in your phone.
  8. Now, select photos to download.
  9. Click the More options icon on the upper-right corner (three dots stacked vertically).
  10. Click Download from the list.
  11. Wait until your computer is finished downloading the photos.

Once this procedure is complete, you can delete the photos from your phone.

Transfer photos from phone to computer via USB cable (wired)

This method of transferring photos and files to a computer requires your phone to be connected to the machine until the transfer is complete. You will be using the data cable that came with the device or any third-party cables that work perfectly with your phone. Here’s how you do it…

  1. Connect your Android to your computer.
  2. When prompted to choose a connection type, tap Media device (MTP).
  3. On your computer, open the File Explorer.
  4. Click your Android phone’s name. If you can’t find it, then try clicking on This PC in the left sidebar.
  5. Double-click the “Internal storage” or “SD card” folder. If you have a microSD card mounted on your phone and you saved your photos in there, then click SD card, otherwise, they must be saved in the internal storage.
  6. Double-click the “DCIM” folder. This is the default folder where all photos and videos taken by your phone’s camera are saved.
  7. Double-click the “Camera” folder.
  8. Select the photos you want to transfer and then right-click on selected photos and choose Copy.
  9. You may then paste them to a folder in your computer so the download will begin.

Depending on the number of the photos you’re copying, this process may take a few minutes to complete. But once done, you may now delete the photos from your phone. It’s better to copy them and not to cut just to make sure you can successfully create a copy of each item before you delete the source files.
