How To Fix LG V40 Restarts On Its Own

Problem: Hi,Bought an LG V40 ThinQ last month, was fine at 1st, past couple days keeps continuously restarting, usually around 40% sometimes 80% only way to fix it and make it stop restarting is putting it on the charger,it also sometimes restarts when I try to take a picture. I’ve tried safe mode does the same thing, I’ve tried battery apps they tell me battery is good, I don’t know what’s causing this it’s very frustrating! Would you have any ideas what could be wrong?

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on this phone it’s best to make sure that it is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

Perform a soft reset

The first thing you will need to do in this case is a soft reset which is usually performed whenever minor software glitches occurs on a device. This is done by pressing and holding the Power button and Volume Down until the device powers off, approximately 8 seconds, then release.

Remove the micro SD Card

If you have a micro SD card installed  in your phone then I suggest that you remove it as this can also cause the problem especially if it has some corrupted sectors. Once the card is corrupted it can cause the phone to have difficulty in accessing the data stored in it and will usually cause the device to reboot.

Check if the problem occurs in Safe Mode

There can be instances when an app you recently downloaded can cause this problem. This can be checked by starting the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • With the screen on, press and hold the Power key.
  • In the options menu that displays, press and hold Power off.
  • When prompted to restart in Safe Mode, tap OK.
  • After your device restarts, it displays Safe mode at the bottom of the screen.

If the phone apps don’t crash in this mode then the problem could be  caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition

Your phone will store temporary data in a dedicated partition in its storage space which helps the device run apps smoothly. If this data gets corrupted then issues can occur on the device. To make sure that this is not what’s causing the problem you will have to clear the cache partition of the phone.

  • From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  • Tap the ‘General’ tab.
  • Tap Storage > Internal storage.
  • Wait for menu options to finish calculating.
  • Tap Free up space.
  • Tap Temporary files & raw files.
  • Select the following options: Cached data, Clip tray temporary files, Raw files from camera
  • Tap Delete > DELETE.

Perform a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step you can perform if the above steps fails to fix the problem is a factory reset. Take note that this will erase your phone data so it’s best to backup the phone data before proceeding.

  • Back up data on the internal memory before performing a factory reset.
  • From the Home screen, Settings.
  • Tap the ‘General’ tab.
  • Tap Restart & reset.
  • Tap Factory data reset.
  • If desired, tap the Erase SD card checkbox.
  • Tap RESET PHONE – Delete all – RESET

You can also perform the factory reset using the hardware keys.

  • Backup all data on the internal memory before performing a master reset.
  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons.
  • When the LG logo appears, quickly release and then re-hold the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume down button.
  • When the ‘Delete all user data (including LG and carrier apps) and reset all settings’ message appears, use the Volume down button to highlight Yes.
  • Press the Power button to reset the device

In case the issue still persists even after performing the steps listed above then this could already be caused by  faulty hardware component. The best thing to do right now is to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
