How to Fix LG G7 ThinQ Bluetooth Does Not Pair Automatically

Problem:  I just bought an LG G7 ThinQ and am having trouble with the Bluetooth function when used with a 2018 Hyundai Elantra. You can pair it successfully and it will work until you turn the car off. Then the next time you turn the car on, the phone will not pair automatically. If you navigate to the Bluetooth screen on the car it shows that it sees the phone and is trying to connect… but it just keeps trying unsuccessfully. If you navigate to the Bluetooth screen on the phone it shows that it is on but not connected. You have to cancel the connection, press “add new”, and go through the new device pairing steps every time you start the car. I’ve had 2 Motorola phones and 1 iPhone work fine with the car in the past, so it’s not the car. I went through the mobile service carrier Tech support and they reset the phone then gave me a replacement one but the problem persists. Based on the troubleshooting work so far it seems to me that it is a problem with the G7 ThinQ settings that it does not automatically pair itself when it should.

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on this device it’s best to make sure that the phone is running on its latest software version. If an update is available then make sure to download and install it first.

The same goes to your car Bluetooth system, if a new firmware update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

What we will be focusing on right now is to check if the problem is caused by a software glitch by following the troubleshooting steps listed below.

Reset Network Settings

The first thing you will want to do in this case is to reset the network settings of the phone. This will reset the data connections of the phone back to its original out of the box condition. The following will apply when you perform this step.

  • Stored Wi-Fi networks will be deleted.
  • Stored tethered connections will be deleted.
  • Paired Bluetooth devices will be deleted.
  • Background data sync settings will be turned on.
  • Data restrictive settings in applications that were manually turned on/off by the customer will be reset to the default setting.
  • Network selection mode will be set to automatic.
  • Preferred mobile network type will be set to best.

To perform this step

  • From the Home screen, Settings.
  • Tap the ‘General’ tab.
  • Tap Restart & reset > Network settings reset > RESET SETTINGS > Reset Settings.
  • A ‘Network settings have been reset’ message briefly flashes to indicate the reset is complete.

Pair your phone with your car Bluetooth

Once the network setting has been reset it’s time to pair your phone again to your car.

  • From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  • Tap the ‘Networks’ tab.
  • Tap Bluetooth.
  • Tap the Bluetooth switch to the ON setting.
  • Tap SEARCH.
  • Tap a device to pair with.
  • If prompted, verify the passkey, and then tap Pair.
  • If prompted, enter the PIN and tap OK.
  • If prompted, accept the pairing on the other device.
  • For some Bluetooth headsets, the device may pair and connect without a password or pairing request,
  • Once connected, the device displays as connected under PAIRED DEVICES.

Once the connection is successful try to turn off the Bluetooth switch of the phone then turn it on again. Check if it automatically connects to your car system. If it doesn’t then proceed with the additional troubleshooting steps listed below.

Check if the issue occurs in Safe Mode

When the phone is started in Safe Mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run. This makes it easier to check if a downloaded app is causing the problem.

  • Make sure that the phone is powered off.
  • Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button until the System recovery screen displays then release both buttons.
  • Select Safe mode. Use the Volume buttons to highlight the option and the Power button to select.
  • The device starts up with ‘Safe mode’ displayed in the lower-left.

If the problem does not occur in this mode then it could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

There are instances when the phone’s cached data can get corrupted and when this happens certain issues can occur on the device. To eliminate this possibility you will have to wipe the cache partition of the phone.

  • From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  • Tap the ‘General’ tab.
  • Tap Storage > Internal storage.
  • Wait for menu options to finish calculating.
  • Tap Free up space.
  • Tap Temporary files & raw files.
  • Select the following options: Cached data, Clip tray temporary files, Raw files from camera
  • Tap Delete > DELETE.

Perform a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step to consider is a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before performing this step as it will be deleted in the process.

Factory reset from the settings menu

  • From the Home screen go to Settings.
  • Tap the ‘General’ tab.
  • Tap Restart & reset.
  • Tap Factory data reset.
  • If desired, tap the Erase SD card checkbox.
  • Tap RESET PHONE > Delete all > RESET

Factory reset using the hardware keys

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons.
  • When the LG logo appears, quickly release and then re-hold the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume down button.
  • When the ‘Delete all user data (including LG and carrier apps) and reset all settings’ message appears, use the Volume down button to highlight Yes.
  • Press the Power button to reset the device.

If the issue still persists even after a factory reset then this could be caused by a bug in the current software version of the phone. This should be fixed with a later update.
