How to fix Google Play Store error 504 on Samsung Galaxy Note 9

The Google Play Store error 504 occurs while downloading an application. Recently, we have readers who reported to have been getting this message on their Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and that’s the reason we need to address it. The actual error message goes like this “Application can’t be installed. Try again, and if the problem continues, get help troubleshooting. (Error code: -504)” and the app download and installation will be stopped.

It would be very annoying if you’re trying to download or install a large app and then this error shows up because you will have to redownload it and wait for it only to be greeted by this error message. Among the common reasons why this error shows up is when the download is interrupted or the connection is cut off. But then again it also be just a result of a minor issue and that’s the reason why you have to take time troubleshooting your phone if the error 504 shows up. How to troubleshoot Galaxy Note 9 with Google Play Store error 504

The following are the things you need to do to address the error 504 on your Galaxy Note 9…

Force reboot your Note 9. Again, there’s always a possibility that this is just a temporary problem caused by a glitch in either the Play Store or the firmware itself. Therefore, it’s best to reboot your device first or perform the forced restart which is far more effective than the normal reboot. To do this, press and hold both volume down and power keys together for 10 seconds or more. Once your phone has fully rebooted, try to download the app to see if the error still shows up and if it still does, move on to the next procedure.

Reset network settings. This will rule out the possibility that the problem is caused due to the interruption in the connection. If that’s really the case, we don’t know for sure what the problem is so it’s better to do a general troubleshooting procedure for all wireless connection in your phone. Resetting the network settings is your best bet here and it’s actually very effective in addressing or fixing network-related issues. Here’s how it’s done…

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > General Management > Reset > Reset network settings.
  3. Tap RESET SETTINGS.
  4. If you have set up a PIN, enter it.
  5. Tap RESET SETTINGS. Once complete, a confirmation window will appear.

Once it’s done, the following changes will occur so make necessary changes…

  • Stored Wi-Fi networks will be deleted.
  • Paired Bluetooth devices will be deleted.
  • Background data sync settings will be turned on.
  • Data restrictive settings in applications that were manually turned on/off by the customer will be reset to the default setting.
  • Network selection mode will be set to automatic.

Clear Play Store’s cache and data. Doing so will reset the Play Store back to its default settings and configuration. Based on experience, this method is perfect for this problem. Don’t worry, none of your apps and data will be deleted. Only the Play Store’s cache and data will be replaced with new ones. Here’s how it’s done…

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > Apps.
  3. To display preinstalled apps, tap Menu > Show system apps.
  4. Find and tap Google Play Store.
  5. Tap Storage > CLEAR CACHE > CLEAR DATA > DELETE.

After doing this and the problem continues, then you have no other choice but to reset your phone.

Backup important files and data and reset your Note 9. At this point, a reset is already necessary. Play store is a core application and it’s deeply integrated into the firmware. It’s always possible that the error 504 is just a result of a firmware issue and so reset is a must. So, create a backup of your important files and data and then follow these steps to reset your phone…

  1. Back up data on the internal memory. If you have signed into a Samsung account on the device, you have activated Anti-theft and will need your Samsung credentials to finish the master reset.
  2. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  3. Tap Settings > Cloud and accounts > Backup and restore. That is if you still need to create a backup.
  4. Tap General Management > Reset > Factory data reset.
  5. Scroll to the bottom of the screen, then tap RESET > DELETE ALL.
  6. If you have screen lock turned on, enter your credentials.
  7. If prompted to verify your Samsung account, enter the password, then tap CONFIRM.
  8. Wait for the device to reset.
