How To Fix Samsung Galaxy S9+ No Sound After Software Update

Problem: Yesterday I upgraded the software on my phone S9+ and ever since I’ve been having audio problems. First I thought it was with the Bluetooth but now I realize it’s just no audio working at all. I haven’t done anything to my phone and I’m on vacation so can’t quite get it checked. I tried all the trouble shooting except the factory reset since I’m on vacation I don’t want to do that. Can you provide any additional help?

Solution: Since your phone is already running on the latest software update then it’s time to proceed directly with the troubleshooting steps listed below.

Reboot the phone

The first thing you will have to do in this particular case is to reboot the phone. This will refresh the phone software and fix any temporary software glitches that could be causing the problem.

  • Press and hold the Power button.
  • Tap the option to Power off.
  • Tap Power off again to confirm.
  • After about 30 seconds, press and hold the Power button again until your phone boots up.

Check the phone volume setting

Sometimes this problem can just be caused by the volume setting of the phone set to its minimum level. Make sure that this is set to its maximum level.

  • Swipe up or down from the center of the Home screen to open the Apps screen.
  • Go to Settings.
  • Tap Sounds and vibration.
  • Tap Volume.
  • To adjust the volume level, drag the slider left or right.
  • Also try to adjust the volume level for other options like Ringtone, Media, Notifications, and System.

You should also make sure that the mute option of the device is not enabled.

  • Swipe up or down from the center of the Home screen to open the Apps screen.
  • Tap Settings.
  • Tap Accessibility.
  • Navigate to the Categories section.
  • Then tap Hearing.
  • Tap the switch next to Mute all sounds option to turn the feature OFF if necessary. When this feature is switched on you won’t hear any sound from your phone.

Turn off the Bluetooth

If the phone Bluetooth is on and your phone is connected to a Bluetooth speaker the sound will be routed to this speaker. To eliminate this possibility you should turn off the Bluetooth feature of the phone.

  • Swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  • Tap Settings.
  • Select Connections.
  • Tap the Bluetooth switch to turn it off, if necessary.

Reset the phone settings

Try resetting the phone to its default configuration. This means that any customizations that you made will be discarded however your apps and data will not be affected.

  • Swipe up on an empty spot from the Home screen to open the Apps tray.
  • Tap Settings.
  • Tap General Management.
  • Tap Reset.
  • Select the option to Reset settings.
  • Tap Reset settings to continue.
  • If prompted, enter your device credentials like PIN or password.
  • Then tap Reset settings again to confirm reset.

Check if the issue occurs in Safe Mode

One way to check if an app you downloaded is causing the problem is if the phone is started in Safe Mode. In this mode, only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run making it easier to check if a downloaded app is causing the problem.

  • Turn the phone off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
  • When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.

In case the sound works in this mode then it’s likely that the problem is caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Perform a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step you should consider is a factory reset. This will revert your phone back to its original factory condition. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing the reset as it will be deleted in the process.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

In case the issue still persists at this point then you will need to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
