How To Fix Samsung Galaxy S9+ Getting Pop Up Ads

Problem: keep getting a pop up when I’m accessing internet sites such as USAToday, etc.  After a few minutes, a pop up will occur and It says it’s from www.breakingbuzzfeed.com  It indicates “I’ve won a prize” I just need to spin the wheel. There is NO way for me to exit from the screen.  It completely captures my screen and none of the “buttons” work any longer. So far, the only way I’ve found to exit it is to literally turn the phone off and do a restart.  Of course, that is totally annoying. If I could just block this popup completely from showing up that would be great. I literally JUST GOT THIS PHONE about 2 weeks ago and this stupid popup started showing up almost immediately.  So, I don’t think I’ve downloaded anything to get it…it must have already been there.

Solution: Before troubleshooting this problem the first thing you should do is to make sure that the phone is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then download and install it first in your phone.

One of the main reasons why your phone is getting pop up ads is because you might have downloaded an app that is causing this problem. This usually happens if you download the app from third party source or if you sideload the APK file of the pap directly to your phone. Getting apps only from the Google Play Store is one way to prevent getting pop up ads however there are still instances when certain apps available at the Play Store can cause this problem. Follow the troubleshooting steps we have listed below to fix this issue.

Disable Marketing Information

There are instances when Samsung will send your phone targeted ads either through push notifications, email, or SMS. If you don’t want to receive these ads then you should turn off the marketing information setting of the phone.

  • Go to the Settings app on your Galaxy S9.
  • Scroll down to find and open General Management.
  • Make sure that the Marketing information option is disabled.

Start the phone in Safe Mode

If the above step fails to fix the problem then the next step is to check if an app you downloaded is causing the problem. You can do this by starting the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn the phone off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
  • When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.

If the pop up ads don’t appear in this mode then the problem is most likely caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

One way to find out what app is causing this problem is by following the steps listed below.

  • From the home screen of your phone open the Google Play Store app
  • Using the search bar at the top of the screen, look up your suspected third-party app.
  • If the app description under the Installed button reads “Contains ads”, then this app is most likely causing the random pop up of ads. Remove this app as well as any of the apps that you have sideloaded to your phone.

Perform a factory reset

In case the pop up ads still appear when the phone is started in Safe Mode then the best thing to do right now is to perform a factory reset. Since this will revert your phone back to its original factory condition it’s a good idea to backup your phone data before doing this step.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.
