Problem: I have a J6 that I purchased about a week ago. With the recent Oreo 8.0 update, a slow battery charging issue reared its ugly head. While I no longer have the original USB cable due to the fact that it got lost, I did purchase what I am sure is a better one. Until the update, I had no issues with it whatsoever. This is a factory unlocked phone, so it has none of the cell phone carriers’ proprietary apps and Bs on it, a good phone most of the time. I dida factory reset and subsequently spent another 2 hours getting the phone back to a point that I liked it with the apps where they should be. Still charging slowly. Really freakin pissed!!!

Solution: Whenever issues occur right after a software update the general consensus is that there is some old software data that has not been completely removed during the update process which is causing the problem. In this particular case we are dealing with an issue that occurred right after the update which is why we should first determine if this is caused by the update by following the troubleshooting steps listed below.

Clean the charging port of the J6

The first thing you will want to do is to make sure that the charging port of the phone is free from any signs of dirt or debris. The presence of these can usually interfere with the charging process. Use a can of compressed air to remove any foreign matter in the phone charging port.

Use a different USB charging cord

The charging cord of the phone usually gets damaged easily since it is constantly coiled or bent causing its wires to be cut. To eliminate this possibility its best to use a different charging cord to charge the device. It’s highly recommended that you use a Samsung branded USB cable.

Use a different wall charger

There are instances when the wall charger that you are using is not providing the necessary output power to fast charge the phone. To check if the charger is causing the problem try using another one with an output power of at least 2.0A.

Update your phone apps

Since your phone is running on the latest software update some of your apps might not be optimized to run on this new version yet. This might cause issues such as the slow charging problem you are experiencing. Try to update your phone apps then check if the issue gets fixed.

  • From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  • Tap Play Store.
  • Tap the Menu key and then tap My Apps. To keep your apps automatically updated, tap the Menu > Settings then tap Auto-update apps to select the check box.
  • Choose one of the following options: Tap Update to update all applications with updates available or tap an individual application and then tap Update to update a single application

Start the phone in Safe Mode

There are instances when an app you downloaded can cause this particular problem. To check if this is the case you will need to start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the Power key for one or two seconds to turn on the device.
  • When the Samsung logo displays, press and hold the Volume down key until the lock screen displays.

If you don’t experience the problem in this mode then it’s most likely caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Factory reset the Galaxy J6

One last troubleshooting step that you should do is a factory reset. This will allow you to eliminate any software related glitches that could be causing the problem by reverting the device back to its original factory condition. Take note that you will have to backup your phone data before doing the reset as it will be deleted in the process.

  • Go to “Settings”
  • Go to “Personal”
  • Tap “Backup and reset”
  • Optionally, turn “Back up my data” and “Restore” ON or OFF
  • Tap “Factory data reset” > “Reset device”
  • If your phone is protected by a lock screen, enter your PIN/password and tap “Continue”
  • Tap “Delete all” > “Reset device”

In case the above steps fails to fix the problem then this could already be caused by a faulty hardware component. If this is the case then the best thing you can do right now is to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
