Problem #1: Galaxy S9 Plus freezes when SIM card is inserted
Hi. Recently picked up a nice shiny S9 Plus, charged it all up all files & apps transferred from my old tired S5 Duos and everything works great. but then I add the SIM, I restart the phone and on every single occasion it hangs on a black screen. Nothing displays at all, no logo or message. All I see is the blue indicator light pulsating away. To resolve it I have to do a soft boot then everything works. Any idea what is going on as this phone isn’t the cheapest and it feels like I am back in the days of Windows 95 constantly hanging? Be great if you have a solution, apart from take the SIM card out that is. Thanks.
Solution: When it comes to electronics troubleshooting, there’s no clear cut solution for everything. If you’ve isolated the cause of the problem to the SIM card, then you should focus your efforts confirming that first. So, the first question that you want to ask yourself is this: Does your new Galaxy S9 Plus work normally without a SIM card? If the answer to that is yes, then the SIM card is probably interfering with Android. If your S9 Plus is part of your carrier contract, then you need to ask them for further assistance. There may be a unique bug in their firmware that only them is aware of. Alternatively, you want to see if the bug can be fixed by installing the latest update (that is if you can reboot the phone normally and check for updates under Settings > Software update.
We assume you have a brandnew S9 Plus so if it was purchased separately (and not provided by your carrier), you can try to factory reset it first. This will allow the system to get rid of temporary issues that may have developed after setting the device up. Once you’ve factory reset the device, re-insert the SIM and see what happens. If the problem returns after that, you should contact Samsung so they can take a look and advise you on what to do. They may either repair or replace the unit.
For reference, here are the steps on how to factory reset your S9 Plus:
- Turn off the device. This is important. If you can’t turn it off, you’ll never be able to boot to Recovery Mode. If you are not able to shut the device off regularly via the Power button, wait until the phone’s battery is drained. Then, charge the phone for 30 minutes before booting to Recovery Mode.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
- Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
- Press Power button to select.
- Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
- Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
- When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
Problem #2: Galaxy S9 apps not getting notifications
Hi. i’ve been receiving the notification to update my phone software for quite some time but kept delaying. Yesterday suddenly my twitter and telegram notifications are not working so i decided to install the software thinking that it may help. However after installing even my instagram is not receiving notification. i’ve tried to restart, on and off, checked all the notification settings both in the app itself as well as in the general notification setting. its not working for some but working for others. I read online to uninstall Security Master App/ sweep, but i cant find any app by that name in my phone nor in the settings. please let me know if you have a solution to my problem. thank you! Solution: If you’re positive that notification settings for the apps in question have already been set properly, then one of the troubleshooting steps below should help you resolve the issue.
Reset app preferences
Apps need other default and third party apps or services in order to work. Sometimes, a default app may become disabled by accident or even by other apps. To ensure that the system’s default apps are working as intended, follow the steps below:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap More settings (three-dot) icon at the upper right.
- Tap Reset app preferences.
Delete BadgeProvider app data
Another way to fix notification issues in Android is to ensure that a particular app called BadgeProvider is working normally. BadgeProvider manages notifications in Android and it’s usually the culprit for many notification bugs that are being sent our way. Since there’s no way to know if your phone’s BadgeProvider app is working or not, it’s best if you simply turn it back to its default state. Here’s how it’s done:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap on More settings at the upper right (three-dot icon).
- Select Show system apps.
- Find and tap your app.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear Data button.
- Restart your S9 and check for the problem.
Reset all settings
This procedure is separate from the previous one as it covers all settings of your Android device and not just the apps. To do this, follow the steps below:
- From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
- Tap General Management > Reset settings.
- Tap Reset settings.
- If you have set up a PIN, enter it.
- Tap Reset settings. Once complete a confirmation window will appear.
You should consider doing a Factory reset if not one of the suggestions above won’t work. Refer to the steps above on how to perform it. Don’t forget to create a copy of your personal data before hand.
Problem #3: What to do if Galaxy S9 Plus wireless charging option disappeared
This past weekend, we bought an S9 Plus. I currently have an S9 I got in May. We also have an S7 & S8 in the house. I bought a Qi wireless charger from Costco, which has been working on all our devices. Except we can’t get the new S9 Plus to charge on it. Nor can we enable wireless charging on it, as that feature has disappeared from the menu. Literally. Any clue how to get the darn thing to wirelessly charge?
Solution: Both the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus are wireless charging capable devices so it doesn’t make any sense why there’s no such option under Settings. If this has always been the case after you first unboxed this particular S9 Plus, you should consider having it replaced.
If you were able to charge it wirelessly before but then such capability disappeared after some time, try to restart it to Safe Mode. This will allow you to see if a third party app is behind this issue. Here are the steps to do that:
- Turn the device off.
- Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen.
- When “SAMSUNG” appears on the screen, release the Power key.
- Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
- Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
- Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
- Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.
- Check for wireless charging option under Settings > Device maintenance > Battery.
If wireless charging returns under Settings when your S9 Plus is on safe mode, you can bet one of the apps is involved. To identify which of your apps is causing the trouble, you should boot the phone back to safe mode and follow these steps:
- Boot to safe mode.
- Check for the problem.
- Once you’ve confirmed that a third party app is to blame, you can start uninstalling apps individually. We suggest that you begin with the most recent ones you added.
- After you uninstall an app, restart the phone to normal mode and check for the problem.
- If your S9 is still problematic, repeat steps 1-4.
Remember, wireless charging is an integral part of the Galaxy S9 Plus design. It just won’t go away on its own. Since there’s no official statement from Samsung about this feature being removed from any S9 Plus around the world, your issue must be unique to your device. To return your device’s default settings, you must do a factory reset if nothing works, or if nothing changes when your phone is on safe mode.
Problem #4: How to fix Galaxy S9 SD card issue: photos become corrupted and showing grey bar
Hi. I have a galaxy S9. i had bought a micro sd card to store pics and videos because i don’t have enough storage on the phone. I had no trouble transferring my pics over. Then i set my phone so that all pictures and videos taken will be saved on the micro sd card automatically instead of internal storage. After a while i noticed my pics started to get corrupted. When i would open an image there would be a large grey bar going through it. But when i looked at the thumbnail of the same pic it was fine. Eventually it got worse and even the thumbnails would have the grey bar on it. So i transferred my pics back onto the internal storage. I formatted the micro sd card and i tried again. I put a few ‘test ‘ pictures on it and waited a couple of months, checking on them periodically. Everything was fine so i transferred more pics to test it out and within a couple of weeks i noticed a picture got corrupted. So what should i do? Get another micro sd card? Format it on my phone? Is it my phone and not the card? Please help.
Solution: We don’t think this is an SD card issue because if it is, either your photos become corrupted right away or not at all. If photos transferred to the SD card works fine initially, the cause of the problem must be coming from the phone. We suggest that you factory reset your phone instead to remove any possible bug causing this problem.
It’s also possible that one of your apps may be behind this issue. If the problem occured after installing a particular app, or after wiping the phone thru factory reset, you should focus your troubleshooting finding which of your apps is the root cause. Start by uninstalling any app that can modify camera behaviors or access and edit photos. Since only you knows your apps, resolving this issue lies solely on you.
It won’t hurt if you can replace the SIM card too. Remember, we can only speculate on this matter. We haven’t encountered this issue anywhere before so there may be a unique bug in your system causing it.
