Problem: I just wanted to update my Samsung Galaxy S9 with the newest Update distributed by Samsung and now it is stuck in a boot loop. I wanted to do a Master Reset but holding the bixby and the volume up button and then the power button which led me to a screen where it said a software update was being performed. At 28% the “update” crashes (every single time) and my phone is once again stuck in a boot loop. Is there anything else I can do?

Solution: Software updates are usually pushed to your device to improve its performance, introduce new features, or enhance its security. Usually, it is quite easy to update the phone software since it is done automatically with just your approval needed. Sometimes though, certain users can occur such as the one where the device gets stuck in a bootloop after the update. To fix this problem you should follow the troubleshooting steps listed below.

Make sure that the phone battery is fully charged

The first thing you will need to do in this case is to make sure that the battery of your phone has sufficient charge. Connect the device to its wall charger then let it fully charge. Once this is done disconnect the phone from the charger.

Perform a soft reset

A soft reset is usually performed when a phone is frozen or unresponsive but it can also be done in issues such as this.

  • Press and hold the Power+Volume down buttons until the device powers off (approx. 10 seconds).
  • The Maintenance Boot Mode screen will appear.
  • From the Maintenance Boot Mode screen, select Normal Boot. Use the volume buttons to cycle through the available options and the lower left button (below the volume buttons) to select.

Check if the phone can start in Safe Mode

When the phone is started in Safe Mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run. In case you are able to access this mode without the phone going to a bootloop then it’s very likely that the problem is caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

  • Press and hold the Power button until the Power off prompt appears then release.
  • Touch and hold Power off until the Safe mode prompt appears then release.
  • To confirm, tap Safe mode. This may take up to 30 seconds to complete.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode

Wiping the cache partition of the phone does not delete your personal data. It will however remove any temporary data made by the system which might be corrupt and is causing this problem.

  • Turn off the S9.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Android logo displays, release all three keys.
  • An ‘Installing system update’ message will show for 30 – 60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu options appear.
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  • Press Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Perform a factory reset in recovery mode

One last troubleshooting step to consider is a factory reset. This will revert the phone back to its original factory condition. Take note that this will also erase your personal data stored in the device.

  • Make sure that the phone is off.
  • Press and hold the Volume up+Bixby buttons.
  • While continuing to hold volume up and bixby, press and hold the Power button until the device vibrates and the Samsung Galaxy S9 logo appears then release all buttons.
  • You will see the Android Recovery screen.
  • From the Android Recovery screen, select Wipe data/factory reset. Use the volume buttons to cycle through the available options and the power button to select.
  • Select Yes.
  • Select Reboot system now.
