How To Fix Huawei P20 Pro Not Turning On After Getting Wet

Problem: My friend owns a Huawei P20 Pro. We all know that it is IP67, dust and waterproof. We went to swim in a pool and we used the phone to take a photo underwater but we didn’t use it that much and that long. We only used it for 5-10 mins only. But then the phone’s not turning on. We do not want to dispose the phone as it was a gift and it’s kinda new, we cannot afford to buy new one. We already put it on a bag of rice for like 4 days and 3 nights already. The moist is all gone but then it’s not turning on.

Solution: The Huawei P20 Pro is a device that has an IP67 certification. What this basically means is that it has been tested to keep out dust and is waterproof for up to 30 minutes from a depth of 1 meter. The waterproofing of the phone however will depend on its seals. If there is a break in the seal then some water will enter the phone and could possibly damage some internal components of the device. In case your phone does not turn on after coming in contact with water then you should follow the troubleshooting steps listed below.

Wipe the phone dry

Using a soft cloth you should wipe the exterior part of the phone until no more liquid is present. Do not turn on the phone or connect it to a charger.

Place the phone in a bag or rice or silica gel

One the exterior part of the phone is dry it is time to tackle the internal part of the phone. To remove moisture that could be present inside the phone you should place the device in a bag or rice or silica gel for at least 48 hours. The rice or silica gel will absorb the moisture present inside the phone.

Clean the charging port of the phone

After 48 hours it’s time to remove the phone form the bag of rice or silica gel. It’s very likely that the charging port of the phone will have some particles in it. You will need to use a can of compressed air to clean this charging port.

Charge the phone

Before turning on the phone it is best to charge the phone first for at least 20 minutes using its wall charger.

Turn on the phone

Press and hold the power button until the device turns on

In case the above steps fails to fix the problem then it’s very likely that the phone has suffered from water damage. The best thing that you can do right now is to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
