How to fix Galaxy J5 “Gmail has stopped” error after installing an update

Welcome to yet another #GalaxyJ5 troubleshooting article. Today’s episode will once again cover more common Galaxy J5 problems such as the “Gmail has stopped” error. If you are a Galaxy J5 owner with a problem, this post might help.

Problem #1: How to fix Galaxy J5 “Gmail has stopped” error after installing an update

My phone got a software update recently and this happened overnight. After the software update, Gmail, Google, and some other apps are not opening. It flashes a message saying ‘Gmail has stopped’, every single time. I’ve tried clearing cache of these apps, sent a feedback to Google, and restarted my phone several times. Nothing is working. I don’t want to do a factory reset as I have a lot of important data on my phone which isn’t backed up. Please suggest alternatives that can help me deal with this problem. Jiniyaca

Solution: There’s a number of possible reasons why this is happening. Let’s discuss the factors and the troubleshooting steps.

Delete and sign in Google account

If the issue only affects Google apps, it would be a good idea to try removing your Google account then signing back in. This troubleshooting step sometimes work with many account-related issues. To remove your Google account from your Galaxy J5:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Cloud and accounts.
  3. Tap Accounts.
  4. Tap your Google account.
  5. Tap Remove account.
  6. Restart your Galaxy J5.
  7. Add your Google account again.

Clear Google Services Framework app data

Google Services Framework is an important app that is associated with all Google apps in an Android devices. Sometimes, Google Services Framework app may become corrupted for some reason. If re-signing back in to your Google account won’t work, then wiping the data of Google Services Framework app is a must. Here’s how to do that:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap on More settings at the upper right (three-dot icon).
  4. Select Show system apps.
  5. Find and tap your app.
  6. Tap Storage.
  7. Tap Clear Data button.
  8. Restart your S9 and check for the problem.

Factory reset

Any of the first two troubleshooting suggestions won’t help at all, the only way to fix the issue should be to return your phone’s software information back to their defaults. As you know, this will delete your personal data so you want to make sure you back your data up ahead of time. For reference, these are the steps on how to factory reset your device:

  1. Create a backup of your data.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Problem #2: How to bypass Factory Reset Protection or FRP on the Galaxy J5

Hi. My partner was given a Samsung J5. It’s unfortunately locked and we can’t get past the Factory Reset Protection as it’s asking for the Google account login details for the account used before the factory reset was performed. We’ve tried numerous methods to bypass this, but stumbled upon an issue – the phone can’t connect to WiFi. It’s not picking up the networks around it and consequently nothing has worked. Could you please let us know what we could try?

Solution: If faced with Factory Reset Protection lock, there are only ways to bypass it:

  • provide the correct Google username and password previously added to the device
  • Samsung support

Factory Reset Protection lock was added as a security protection for Android to deter unauthorized access. The downside is that even legitimate users may find themselves lock out of their device. As a workaround for this, Samsung did not make FRP absolute. On a user level, he or she can unlock the device by simply logging in using the Google credentials previously associated with the device. If he or she has forgotten the correct Google credentials, or has other reasons why Google account won’t work, then the only other option left is to seek help from Samsung. Try to bring your device to your local Samsung Service Center so they can unlock the device for you. To show that you are the owner of the device, you must present the original proof of purchase and a valid ID.

Unlike in the past when FRP was recently introduced, there’s currently no other known way to bypass FRP at this time. Samsung had already patched their codes to make FRP more robust so if the two official ways won’t work, your Galaxy J5 is effectively a paperweight.

Problem #3: Galaxy J5 is stuck and shows pixelated screen after an update

I had an update on my Samsung J5 and started the installation as normal. I usually just leave it to get on and do the required when prompted. I noted however that the screen had stuck and looked pixelated, I’d never seen that before! I had a fiddle I.e tried to switch off and followed guidelines but all that seems to have failed and now have a phone with a black screen. However, either side of the home key those two buttons are illuminated. I am not a tech person and this feels a bit overwhelming.. Can you help me?

Solution: Sometimes, update installation can take a long time. This is the main reason why it’s always recommended to ensure that the battery has enough power level to prevent the device from turning off. The last thing you want to do is to interrupt a device while it’s updating. Because updates tries to access large parts of the storage device, it can sometimes be fatal for a device if it loses power or turned off in the middle of an update.

To see if the problem is fixable on your level, try to restart the phone to Recovery Mode and clear its cache and/or perform a master reset. Here’s how to do that:

  1. Turn off the device. This is important. If you can’t turn it off, you’ll never be able to boot to Recovery Mode. If you are not able to shut the device off regularly via the Power button, wait until the phone’s battery is drained. Then, charge the phone for 30 minutes before booting to Recovery Mode.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).

If you are able to successfully boot your phone to Recovery Mode, any of the two solutions (cache partition wipe or factory reset). If the phone won’t boot to Recovery Mode or remains in its current state after a factory reset, you may have damaged the software environment or the storage partitions for good. If you can, try flashing stock firmware to the device. If that won’t work either, contact Samsung so they can replace the device.

Problem #4: Galaxy J5 gets stuck in Samsung logo screen when using a new battery

I recently lost my phone and borrowed a Samsung Galaxy J5 from a friend. it has missing a battery so I got an old battery from another friend. The problem is that this battery does not hold charge for long so I was just using it until I could’ve sourced a new battery. I got a new battery, replaced the old one (after powering off my phone) and plugged in the charger, it stated 89% charged so I turned on the phone. The phone kept turning off (It booted all the way on, but turned off after approximately 2-5 seconds after entering the passcode). I left it to charge to 100% while I went to run an errand and not it won’t move past the first screen. before restarting where it will be stuck on the same screen until I just turns off. It turns on perfectly fine with the old battery.

Solution: Did you get an original Samsung battery for this particular phone model? If not, consider the fact that you may have gotten a fake. That means that the new battery may not have the correct output to give a stable power needed by the system. The problem is clearly battery-related since the device works fine with the old one. We understand it’s easier to source things online nowadays but the problem is, a lot of low-quality or fake electronics are everywhere. If you are buying a new battery online, be sure it’s an official one for the Galaxy J5. if you don’t do online purchases, visit your local Samsung store instead to get a new battery.
